Interfaith dialogue is critical to health of society: V-P

Interfaith dialogue is critical to health of society: V-P
New Delhi, Oct 31: Underlining the importance of interfaith dialogue, Vice President Hamid Ansari on Friday said inculcating its values in educational system could help improve "health" of the society.

"The interfaith dialogue is critical to our health as a society. Its success would lie in widening the ambit of its adherents, and their acceptance of it as an imperative necessity," he said.

Ansari was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day national conference on "The Interfaith Movement - where do we go from here" organised by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

Highlighting importance of interfaith movement, he said inculcating its values in the educational system could help the society to a great extent.

"The Interfaith Movement has a role to play. This is being understood globally. The 2002 Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders spelt out its basic principles. These need to be furthered.”

"A critical role in this will be played by inculcating its values in the educational system. Only this can provide the right type of nourishment to the mind," he added.

Observing that intellectuals could play a role in initiating interfaith dialogue, he said its practical relevance in a democratic polity would lie in its dissemination among the common folk.

This process of assistance begins in schools but cannot succeed unless it is imbibed by the society as a whole, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, educationist and senior Congress leader Karan Singh said in the backdrop of growing social tension, the interfaith movement has become very important.

Telling Hindu majority India that inter-faith dialogue is important is somewhat unnecessary, because all faiths have been allowed to live and thrive in India due to the Hindu broad-mindedness. Probably our VP should give such lectures in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Bihar CM condemns killing of Patna youth by Mumbai police

Bihar CM condemns killing of Patna youth by Mumbai police
Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi, Oct 27: A group of agitated Bihar leaders including the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and Lok Janshakti Party president Ram Vilas Paswan met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and expressed deep anguish over the shoot out of Rahul who had been repeatedly asking the passengers not to panic and was not seen by any eye witness to have fired on anyone.

He was murdered in cold blood and I have strong objections to the Home Minister’s statement,” Nitish Kumar said. He also added that the PM has promised to take action and he was sure that justice would be done in Rahul’s case.

An angry Lalu Yadav lashed out on the Mumbai police accusing them on firing on and killing an innocent Rahul who comes from a respectable family and who had no intention to harm any one but to bring his thoughts before the people.

On the other hand, Lok Jan Shakti leader Ram Vilas Paswan asked the centre to impose Article 355 on Maharastra and demanded judicial probe into Rahul’s case.

Maha political parties flay Bihar leaders` stand

Political parties in Maharashtra

today accused political leaders from Bihar of adopting an `anti-Maharashtra` stand following the killing of a Bihar boy in a shootout here and said this would send a `wrong signal`.

Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Sanjay Raut was critical of Bihar leaders dragging his party’s name unnecessarily in this episode.

All Maharashtra MPs cutting across party lines should take note of "anti-Maharashtra" stand taken by the leaders from Bihar, Raut told agencies.

"The stand of Bihari leaders is setting a wrong precedent and our party would have to take a definite stand if this continues," Raut said.

Echoing similar view, Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil said trying to present the shootout as Bihar versus Maharashtra by Bihari political leaders was `unnecessary` and `uncalled for` and instead they should get together to create more jobs in their state.

"The Bihar leaders should stop this divisive politics and concentrate on development activities for the youth in the state", he said adding in the shootout incident "police could not have remained a mute spectator".

"The state government should become alert at least after the Bihar boy fired from a pistol in a local bus in this manner," MNS General Secretary Shirish Parkar said.

"They should understand from the incident that how weapons are easily available in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh," Parkar added.

When a man hijacks a bus, ties up the conductor, fires shots injuring two persons and brandishes the gun to all and sundry, the police, in the midst of peak hour traffic would have had only one thought - to somehow neutralize the crazy man. They could not take the risk of mollycoddling the youth. Therefore the police did the right thing in shooting the chap who wanted to shoot Raj Thackeray. Instead of calling the youth’s antics foolish, the Bihar CM has called the police cold blooded murderers. I am sure in similar circumstance, his police force would have acted similarly. I congratulate the Mumbai Police force for quickly bringing the drama to a conclusion.

`Two more slain terrorists in Kashmir were from Kerala`

`Two more slain terrorists in Kashmir were from Kerala`
Zeenews Bureau
Srinagar, Oct 26: Security forces on Sunday said that they have identified two more slain terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir whose roots belong to Kerala – this in addition to two other extremists from the same state.

With this a total number of four militants have been identified who belonged to the southern state.

The militants have been identified as Faiz of Kannur and Mohammad Yasir of Ernakulam. Both were killed in the Kupwara encounter earlier this month, in which another associate of theirs had managed to give a slip to the police.

Security forces said that the militant- identified as Abdul Jabbar - is hiding somewhere in the southern state.

Earlier on Saturday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police reiterated that the two suspected terrorists killed in a shootout in north Kashmir earlier this month were from Kerala and belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror outfit.

Based on the election identity cards found with them, their fingerprints and other evidence, the men were identified as Abdul Rehman and Muhammad Fayaz, belonging to Kannur and Malappuram districts of Kerala respectively.

The latest developments are in contrast with the past when only foreign and, in some cases, Kashmiris used to join terrorist organisations.

The newer facts clearly suggest that the terror network is much more deeper than earlier assumed.

It is obvious that these terrorists were trainees who would have returned to Kerala to take part in terrorists activities. It is likely that there are trained terrorists in Kerala waiting to strike and many more ready to undergo training. If this threat is not nipped in the bud, Kerala will go the Kashmir way. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Malegaon blast: 2 ex-Army officials held

Malegaon blast: 2 ex-Army officials held
Zeenews Bureau

Bhopal, Oct 25: A day after arresting three suspects – Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Shamlal Sahu and Shivnarayan Singh – in connection with last month’s Malegaon blast, the Mumbai Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Saturday detained two former Army officials from Pune.

The ex-Army officials are believed to have given training to the people involved in carrying out the blast.

Meanwhile, ATS officials are visiting Bhopal for further investigations and are likely to make more arrests in connection with the case.

ATS officials are also likely to visit Gwalior in connection with the probe into the blast.

Earlier, a young Sadhvi suspected to have links with a Hindu right-wing group and two other men were slapped with murder charges after they were arrested for their alleged involvement in the Malegaon blast in which the police said the deadly RDX was used.

Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur along with Shamlal Sahu and Shivnarayan Singh, all hailing from Madhya Pradesh, were yesterday produced before a court in Nashik in Maharashtra, which remanded them to police custody till November 3.

The motorcyle used in the Malegaon blasts on September 29 in which five persons were killed belonged to the Sadhvi. Besides having links with the BJP`s student wing ABVP, she is suspected to be associated with the Indore-based radical Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) accused of involvement in the blasts in Malegaon as well as in Modasa in Gujarat in which one person was killed. The right-wing outfit has denied the charge.

Meanwhile, commenting on the Hindu group involved in the blasts, Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi said that Hindu groups would not have been accused of such activities if action against terror groups had been taken earlier. He further said that when people don’t get justice, they take up arms.

Also, former BJP leader Uma Bharti came in support of the Sadhvi, saying she was being wrongly implicated in the case.

ABVP office attacked in Nashik

Protesting the alleged involvement of BJP`s student wing - Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Malegaon and Modasa blasts, NCP student wing on Saturday attacked the ABVP office here, police said.

The activists shouting anti-ABVP slogans entered the right wing students office in the Ashok Stambh locality and damage some furniture and also board of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, police said.

The activists also blackened the face of ABVP members present in the office, police added.

It is only natural that Hindu activists at some point would have said enough is enough and decided to give Islamic terrorists a taste of their own medicine. Let us hope that with this beginning of Hindu terrorism, Muslim terrorism will end. It if does not, Hindu terrorism will only continue in the scene with bolder terrorist acts. So let all men of goodwill attempt to put an end to terrorism from all quarters by demanding that the governments at the centre and states come down with a heavy hand on all those involved in terrorism. Let the government begin with the hanging of the Afzal Mohammad. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

It is extremists from both the religions that are to be blamed. We all need to stop coloring every person from a particular community with the same radical colour. Its time to stand united against terrorists who are killing innocent people.. remember TERRORISTS HAVE NO RELIGION !!! Its a shame that BJP/ShivSena are trying to rationalise terrorist activities !!! - CJ - Mumbai

Raj booked in Biharsharif for abetting murder

Zeenews Bureau Patna, Oct 24:

The uneasy relations between Maharashtra Navnirmaan Senachief and Bihar grew more tenacious on Friday, when a case was slapped against MNS chief Raj Thackeray in Biharsharif for his alleged role in the killing of a student from the state. The boy named Pawan had gone to Mumbai to appear in Mumbai Railway Board examination on Sunday, but died during the violence led by MNS activists. The boy’s father along with four lawyers today registered the case against Thackeray. In the meantime, Bihar’s student group Yuvashakti called for a bandh in the state tomorrow to protest against the violence against North Indian students in Maharashtra. Last evening, an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar agreed to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprise him about the situation. They would also urge him to take measures to stop violence against Biharis. It should be noted that MNS activists had attacked 13 Railway Board Examination centres in suburban Mumbai on Sunday, protesting against "inadequate representation" to locals. They had also chased away candidates from North India. The subsequent violence and rampaging led to the arrest of MNS chief, but the tirade against North Indians did not stop.

Demand for ban on Bajrang Dal sparks uproar in RS

New Delhi ; Oct 23:
A strong demand for ban on Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jagran Manch was on Thursday made in the wake of reports that some Hindu groups were allegedly involved in the Malegaon and Modasa blasts, triggering noisy scenes in the Rajya Sabha. As Brinda Karat (CPI-M) made a forceful demand for the ban, she was immediately countered by BJP members who demanded strong action against SIMI. Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Karat pointed to newspaper reports claiming that Hindu extremist outfits had a hand in the Malegaon incident in Maharashtra and in Modasa in neighbouring Gujarat. She said according to the Anti Terror Squad (ATS) of Maharashtra, Bajrang Dal was involved in the incidents. The CPI(M) members said though the country was united in the fight against terrorists, there should not be two yardsticks for dealing with the menace. Whenever there was a terror attack, only a particular community was branded as terrorists, she said while demanding ban on Bajrang Dal and Hindu Jagran Manch. This provoked BJP and amid shouts and counter-shouts, the House was adjourned for ten minutes. Earlier, as the Zero Hour began, some Congress members, including Rashid Alvi and Jayanthi Natarajan, wanted to raise the issue. However, Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan did not allow them saying they should give a proper notice. Bureau Report

Muslims know very well that Babri Masjid was built after destroying the Ramjanmasthan temple in Ayodhya. In fact, Mohammad himself was the initiator of religious intolerance when he destroyed the idols in Mecca, idols which belonged to people of another religion. Thus, for religious violence Muslims have no one else to blame except themselves.

If Hindu organisations are involved in the Malegaon and Modasa blasts, it signals a reaction to the bomb blasts across the nation by Muslim organisations. While no one has the right to take law into their hands, unless the menace emanating from the original bombers are diffused, reactions are bound to take place. Instead of dealing with the causes, the secularists are upto their antics by blaming the reaction. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

No CBI inquiry into Orissa nun rape case: SC

Zeenews Bureau New Delhi, Oct 22:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to hand over the investigation into the alleged rape of a nun during communal violence in Orissa to the CBI. The Supreme Court, in its order, stated that the proceedings related to violence will be conducted by the Fast Track Courts. The Apex Court also directed the Orissa government to assist in re-building churches that were damaged in violence. The development comes days after Orissa Police claimed to have arrested the main accused in the rape case. The police have so far arrested five persons in connection with the case. However all efforts in tracing the victim have failed. A search for the nun at her native village in Sambalpur district has also yielded no results. Because of its failure to trace the rape victim, the Orissa Police have finally asked its all-women team to return from Delhi. This was confirmed by Orissa Home Secretary T K Mishra who said, “We have been unable to trace the alleged rape victim so far. The police had formed three teams to trace the nun." However, he said that the government had already urged church leaders to cooperate with the police to carry forward investigation so that the culprits could be punished.

The whole case appears to be quite curious. Why is the nun not traceable? Is the story of the nun's rape a cooked up one by the Church to tarnish the name of VHP and divert attention from the heinous murder of an aged Sanyasi and his disciples?

Six hours of mayhem at Mumbai court

Mumbai, October 21: :

For six excruciating hours outside the Bandra Metropolitan Court, hundreds of activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena mocked the Mumbai Police’s law and order machinery as stone pelting and sloganeering became the order of the day. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also mobilised hundreds of its women activists to participate in the protest outside the court while the police had not posted enough women constables to tackle such an eventuality.
Even as MNS chief Raj Thackeray was being escorted into the city, the first shouts of protest went up around 11 am from a woman who was requested by a police constable to make space around the court gates. What ensued was a well-planned demonstration and show of strength, sloganeering and name-calling.
First, about 30 women escorted by male party workers drowned the calls for order with their shouting. In the next 10 minutes, the entire access area to the court was blocked by a huge mob.
A lathicharge by the police was met with heavy stone pelting, the crowd easily outnumbering the police constables wielding lathis. Arguments with mediapersons also ensued, and the court area was eventually cordoned off not only for MNS men, but also for the media. “He is a special man, it’s a special case,” is all that Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 8) Nisar Tamboli would say. The mob kept attacking with stones, and an increasing number of protestors blocked the entire width of the Western Express Highway nearby. It was another four hours until the Rapid Action Force appeared.

Even as slogans laced with abuses against North Indian leaders — Lalu Prasad Yadav was a special target — rent the air, a little after noon, Additional Commissioner of Police Archana Tyagi called for a second lathicharge, driving the crowd towards the highway. The crowd was finally moved out of the court’s access road — a good six hours after the protests first started.
DGP A N Roy said: “We firmly want to assure people that situation is under control. Security forces are deployed across the state. It is not like this one organisation is closing the city. Mumbai is not burning.”

Raj Thackery is projected as a politician standing for Marathi interests. However, interests of no part of India can be protected if the idea of India itself is sought to be ripped apart. Raj Thackeray and his MNS sought to do just this when they attacked North Indians who came to Mumbai to write for an all India Railway Board exam. Therefore Raj Thackeray must be treated as an anti-national extremist, charged under tough laws and clamped behind bars.

Raj Thackeray brought to Mumbai

Zeenews Bureau Mumbai,

Oct 21: MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who was arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday in Ratnagiri, has been brought to Mumbai. Raj was brought under tight security to the Bandra-Kurla police station and will be produced in a suburban magistrate`s court in Bandra after completing the formalities, police said. Heavy stone pelting was reported from outside the Bandra court where hundreds of MNS activists gathered protesting the arrest of their leader. Earlier, the Mumbai Police arrested Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray from a government circuit house in Ratnagiri. The arrest was made after a case was registered against Thackeray following Sunday’s attack on North Indian candidates appearing in a rail exam by MNS workers. A senior police officer said that they will seek his custody from the court. A case was registered against Raj and MNS activists for their alleged involvement in the attack on north Indian candidates appearing for a recruitment exam conducted by the Railways in suburb Kherwadi, city Police Commissioner Hasan Gaffoor said. "We did not know whether he would come back to the city or not. Therefore the arrest in Ratnagiri," he said. MNS activists involved in the attempted assault on candidates have also been arrested and police custody would be sought for all of them, the Commissioner said. Thackeray has been charged under sections 153, 353, 336, 425 and 427 of IPC, police sources said. "Some of the charges are bailable and others are non-bailable and it is up to the court to give the police custody that we will be seeking," Gaffoor said. Preventive arrests of MNS activists have also been made in large number in order to maintain peace across the city, he said. Deshmukh, Patil react to arrest Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, reacting to Raj`s arrest, said the police have arrested an individual who had taken the law into his own hands. "There was no pressure from the Centre and we will now strictly follow the legal procedure," he said. Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said the state government by arresting Thackeray had shown that "he was not above the law". "He had said to show the courage to arrest him and we have done so," Patil said. Earlier, the MNS chief had justified Sunday’s attacks and warned the state that it will have to "regret" the consequences in the event of his arrest. "Arrest me and be ready to bear the consequences.... you will have to regret," Thackeray, who was attending a ceremony at Bahadursheikh Naka in Chiplun, said on Monday. "If Raj is arrested, entire Maharashtra will be set on fire," he threatened. The MNS, predictably, flayed the arrest of its leader and described the incident as a "shame" for Maharashtra. "It is a shame on our government who do not utter anything favouring Marathi people...They are not prompt and keen enough for Maharashtrians," MNS said in a SMS sent to the media. "But they have shown their promptness in arresting a man who is struggling for Marathi people only. There cannot be better example of `Kaliyug`," it said. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray said that Raj must face music for his wrong doings. Arrest triggers violence Following the arrest, sporadic instances of violence were reported from various parts of Maharashtra and Section 144 was imposed in certain parts of Mumbai. MNS activists burnt a toll booth in Mulund while two buses were damaged in Bhiwandi. Violence was also reported from Nasik, Thane, Virle Parle, Juhu, Jogeshwari and Pune. According to reports, about 350 taxis have also been damaged in the violence that followed shortly after Thackrey was arrested. A truck was also set on fire in Panvel. There were also reports of some unidentified men throwing stones at the suburban resident of Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam. MNS attacks 13 Rly exam centres

Mumbai, Oct 19: Activists of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Sunday attacked 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai protesting "inadequate representation" to locals and chased away candidates from north India.

About 10 MNS activists have been arrested from central suburban Dombivali and Kalyan so far for disrupting the exam and preventing candidates from appearing the examination, police said.

"We have arrested 10 MNS activists so far from Dombivali and Kalyan under the charges of rioting at the examination centres," Thane Commissioner of Police Anil Dhere told reporters.

When asked about the candidates being attacked at Thane station in wee hours, Dhere denied the reports. Railway officials confirmed that there was no such incident at Thane station, he said.

Confirming the attack by MNS activists on the examination centres in Mumbai, central railway PRO S Sharma said "We have reports of 13 centres mostly in Dombivali and Navi Mumbai been attacked."

"Attackers even tried to tear exam papers and hall tickets of some of the candidates at Nerul in Navi Mumbai," Sharma said.

Despite the disruption the exam was conducted at total 82 centres in Mumbai with the help of local police, he added.

Defending attacks on North Indians, MNS leader Shishir Shinde told PTI "what is wrong if activists were protesting against the 'inadequate representation' of Marathi candidates in the exam."

"Railway officer should understand the meaning of our protest and allow more Marathi candidates for the examination than the outsiders," Shinde said. "MNS activists would meet railway officials soon", he added.

In November 2003 Raj Thackeray's supporters (then with the Shiv Sena) disrupted a Railway Board exam in suburban Kalyan by preventing candidates from other states, mainly north Indians, from appearing the exam.

Raj Thackeray is more dangerous than Muslim and Naxalite terrorists because Muslim and Naxalite terrorism take on the entire Indian nation and the nation is united against them. Raj Thackeray's terrorism in the name of Marathi manoos will span similar terrorism against Maharashtrians in other states and it will lead to all states being pitted against other states in the name of locals and outsiders. This will lead to civil war and disintegration of India. Therefore the danger Raj Thackeray poses to the integrity of India must be seen very clearly and Raj Thackeray must be arrested and MNS banned forthwith.

‘Raj Thackeray a mental case, ban MNS’

‘Raj Thackeray a mental case, ban MNS’

New Delhi, Oct 19: Condemning the attack on railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai by MNS activists, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Sunday demanded a ban on the outfit, saying its chief Raj Thackeray was a "mental case".

"I strongly condemn the incident. There should be an inquiry into the attack. There should be strong action against that party...MNS should be banned," the Minister told reporters here.

His comments came as a response to the attack on 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai by MNS activists who protested "inadequate representation" to locals and chased away candidates from north India.

Prasad said the directions of the Supreme Court or any other courts did not have any impact on the MNS leader. "We can see such incidents when the elections are near," he said.

The Minister said he had spoken to Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh who assured him of a proper inquiry into the incident.

Bureau Report

The game Raj Thackeray is playing is even more dangerous than the terrorism of Muslims, Naxalites etc. In the case of these terrorists, the battle is between the terrorists and the rest of society. But if Raj Thackeray's cancer spreads, the battle will be amongst all the states of India and India will disintegrate. Politicians like Lalu Prasad Yadav will only help in pouring oil in fire. The nationalists of the nation must take a strong stand against Raj Thackeray.

Britons use reliable Indian post to send X-mas cards

Britons use reliable Indian post to send X-mas cards
London, Oct 19: Christmas is a few weeks away but some Britons travelling to India have started carrying hundreds of cards that they will post in India to friends and family back home here.

The reason? It is cheaper and more reliable to send cards from India rather than from within Britain, thanks to problems faced by Royal Mail that deals with the annual avalanche of Christmas cards and the high price of postage.

So don`t be surprised if you see British citizens queuing up in post offices in India to post Christmas cards to friends and family in Britain.

They have discovered that the doughty Indian postal system - set up during the colonial era - is a more reliable and cheaper alternative.

Kathy Miller, who runs The Neem Tree Trust, a charity organisation focused on disadvantaged children in Tamil Nadu, had a pleasant experience with the Indian postal system when she visited India last year.

She took along her charity Christmas cards designed by the children her organisation supports. Her original idea was to write the Christmas cards there, bring them back to Britain and post them in December.

But while in India, she discovered that if the envelopes were left unsealed, the cost of sending a card from India to Britain was Rs 8. If the same cards were posted in Britain, one can save 21 pounds for 150 cards.

Miller posted the cards in India, and they duly arrived at their addresses in Britain a week later. Her friends here were delighted to receive cards from India, and some even suggested that next year she take their own lot of Christmas cards to India to post.

Miller told a news agency that her experience was not a criticism of Royal Mail, but she had heard of people going to India for dental treatment and medical treatment, but wondered if others had taken advantage of the "excellent and inexpensive Indian postal system".

Miller added, "I`m intending to visit India again this November and of course will be taking my Christmas cards with me."

There have been several instances when Britons travelling to India for other purposes at this time of the year used their trips to carry their Christmas cards along and post them in India instead of in Britain.

Every year, there is a welter of complaints about Royal Mail losing millions of Christmas cards and parcels. It may not be too long before entrepreneurs come up with the idea of "postal outsourcing" from India.

Every Christmas, Royal Mail delivers nearly two billion items within Britain. Last year were complaints following two million cards and presents being lost by Royal Mail workers.

Your comment(s) on this article
The genius of some Britons may have seen Indian post as a reliable alternative to British post but I think the British (as everyone else the world over) must collectively ask themselves why send greeting cards at all for Christmas or any other day? Greeting cards have become a formality and most of us have become trapped in this formality. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Kanpur blast case solved with arrest of two: Police

Lucknow, Oct 16:

With the arrest of two people, police claim to have solved the blast in the industrial city of Kanpur this week that was accidentally caused by firecrackers. Atiq Mohammad, who used to illegally manufacture firecrackers, was caught Wednesday, hours after a general goods shop owner, Kamal Sahu, was arrested in the case. The explosion Tuesday took place outside a liquor shop in Colonelganj locality in Kanpur around 7 p.m. and left five people injured. Sahu's shop is located near the blast site and during investigations it was found that he used to sell firecrackers without a licence, police said. "Atiq Mohammad used to supply firecrackers, including bombs, to Sahu and on Tuesday he was on his way to the shop when he stopped near the liquor store," Kanpur Superintendent of Police H.R. sharma told reporters on phone. Sharma said the explosion was accidental and not a terror blast. The bicycle used by Atiq belonged to a man called Aiyaz and he is still on the run, Sharma added. The duo used to manufacture crackers and bombs illegally in their house in the nearby Bajariya locality and supply them to the city, police said. "We have also recovered a huge cache of firecrackers after a tip-off and hope to arrest Aiyaz soon," Sharma said. Bureau Report

Illegal manufacturing, whether of fire crackers or any other product right in the heart of a city cannot happen without the knowledge of neighbours. The only way to prevent illegal activities and corruption is to create awareness among our citizens that ‘whistle-blowing’ is the greatest of citizenry acts. If we continue to turn a blind eye to corrupt activities even as they are being carried on right before our eyes, we will only be ensuring that our own peace is eventually engulfed in destruction. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Ram Sethu not a place of worship: Centre

Ram Sethu not a place of worship: Centre
New Delhi, Oct 14: Giving a new twist to the Sethusamudram project controversy, the government has contended before the Supreme Court that the mythological Rama Setu bridge is not an "essential" and "integral" part of Hindu religion.

"It has not been proved undoubtedly to be the belief of the Hindu community that Lord Rama did not himself break the bridge. Nor has it been established that whatever remains of the Rama Setu as a piece of worship is an essential and integral part of the Hindu religion," the UPA government said in its written submission.

The government stand assumes importance as on the last hearing on July 30 it had assured the court that it was considering the possibility of pushing the project through an alternative alignment to avoid any damage to 'Rama Setu' for which an expert committee has been set up.

However, it persisted with the argument that Rama Setu or Adams Bridge was broken by Lord Rama while returning from Sri Lanka and as such "anything broken could not be worshipped".

It said that the opponents of the project have not proved that Rama Setu forms an "integral" and "essential" part of Hindu religion and has to be protected.

"A religious belief or practise which is not an essential and integral part of the religion is not protected by Article 25 or 26 of the Constitution", the Centre said and quoted various previous judgements of the apex court to drive home its point.

Following the government assurance in July that it was considering an alternative alignment for the project, the Prime Minister Office had set up an expert committee headed by noted scientist R K Pachauri, Director General of Tata Energy Research Institute, to look into the suggestion.

Though no time-frame has been set for the Committee to place its report, the apex court had said that it will consider the findings of the panel before giving its verdict and had allowed the contesting parties to file written submissions if they wished.

In September last year, the Centre had to withdraw its two controversial affidavits questioning the existence of Lord Rama and opposing claims that the Rama Setu was a man-made bridge.

The Centre once again attacked the AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa for opposing the project on religious grounds saying that the environmental clearance to the project was given by her government.

It said that Jayalalithaa's change in stand was politically motivated despite the fact that in the 2001 Assembly elections she came to power by promising in the election manifesto that the project would be implemented.

"Now at this point of time to say that the Adams Bridge should not be cut is nothing but a politically motivated submission," the Centre said.

‘SC-ST rift caused Kandhamal violence’

New Delhi, Oct 13: Seeking to deflect attention from Bajrang Dal, which has been accused for attacks on Christians, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday said the recent incidents of violence were a manifestation of the "conflict of interest" between Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Speaking at the National Integration Council (NIC) meeting here, he sought to project a rosy picture of Orissa in terms of communal harmony even while acknowledging the "disturbances in some pockets" of the state from "time to time", for which he blamed "ethnic strains, particularly among ST and SC communities.”

Referring to the two incidents of communal violence in Kandhamal, he said there were clashes between members of SC and ST communities in the past "on account of conflict of interest in the matter of land rights, employment opportunities and religion".

"The recent incidents of violence in Kandhamal are a manifestation of such discord," he said about the district where STs constitute 53 percent of the population and SCs constitute 22 percent.

This comment assumes significance as the violence against Christians and Churches has been blamed on Bajrang Dal, prompting demands for banning the Sangh Parivar outfit. Patnaik insisted that the situation in Kandhamal has been brought under control and a "gamut" of measures initiated to facilitate "harmonious and speedier" socio-economic development of different communities living in the district.

He said a Special Administrator of the rank of a Commissioner has been appointed in the district to oversee the development of the area. The administrator has been given powers to settle long-standing issues over land rights.

The Chief Minister is putting a convenient spin on the violent incidents that took place in Orissa. The fact is that the violence was triggered by the murder of a revered Swamiji and the background is conversions. Therefore, seeing the problem as anything other than one born out of the attempts of the missionaries to exploit and convert vulnerable tribals is to deflect from the real problem and allow the missionaries to continue their evil designs. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Why media & poolical leaders on india criticised on bajarang dal sa terrorist outfit??? If detail investigation reveals that that were riot between SC & ST. Its very disapponting to maling hindus! why politians & media is not discussion on conversion carried out by missionaries?? Please through some light on this! Six members of Muslim family burnt alive in Adilabad

By Khabrein.Info Correspondent,

Hyderabad, Oct 12, 2008: Six members of a Muslim family were burnt alive in Andhra Pradesh’s Adilabad district Sunday. Adilabad lies some 275 kilometers from Hyderabad, the state capital.

Rioters who had earlier killed four people in nearby Bhainsa town Friday swooped down on the village and burnt several houses.

The six people of a single family were burnt alive by menacing Hindu mob that had attacked Muslim families in Vatoli village in Andhra Pradesh’s Adilabad district.

Despite the curfew in place since Friday how arsonists who roamed freely on roads across villages were able to torch the houses and set innocent people on fire is a mystery that police can answer better.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy called the incident beastly and barbaric. “It is a beastly and barbaric act” Reddy told reporters Sunday. "Police are investigating the case and we will catch the culprits”, he added.

Muslim leaders accused the government of ignoring their pleas for help.

Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Asaduddin Owaise said, “Despite our repeated pleas and appeals, the government has failed to provide protection to the Muslims who live in remote areas and who have a very small population in those places”.

The incident triggered fresh tension in Bhainsa, which remained under curfew. Tension also prevailed in Nirmal and Adilabad towns as police have imposed prohibitory orders. Taking a serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy asked district police to be on high alert and prevent the spread of violence.

Andhra Pradesh chief minister has asked the police and local administration to remain on high alert and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Violence will breed violence and no one will escape the consequent conflagration. Community leaders from all sides should sit together and strive for peace.

Violence against any religion is unacceptable: Advani

Violence against any religion is unacceptable: Advani

Passi Ghat (Arunachal Pradesh) Oct 11: As attacks on Christians allegedly by Bajrang Dal continued in Orissa, senior BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday denounced violence against any religion or place of worship, saying it is "unacceptable".

"Vandalism and violence against any religion or place of worship shall not be tolerated and is highly condemnable," the BJP's prime ministerial face told a rally in Arunachal Pradesh.

"Differences, if any, should be sorted out through dialogue and no other means is acceptable," Advani said.

The comments of the BJP leader assume significance as Sangh Parivar outfit Bajrang Dal has been accused of perpetrating attacks on Christians and Churches in Orissa as also Karnataka.

Before the rally, a delegation of Christians of Arunachal Pradesh met Advani and sought his intervention in stopping attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka.

In the wake of violence against Christians, pressure is mounting on the Central government to ban Bajrang Dal. The issue even came up at the Union Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, with a number of Ministers pressing for banning Bajrang Dal to send out a message.

The government, however, deferred a decision on it.

The source of religious violence in India is the Islamic and Christian belief that all religions are satanic except their own religions. Muslims forced the partition of India when they became majority in certain regions and are trying to do it again in Kashmir. The N.E. states have a long running secessionist insurgency in the name of Christianity. So long as these religions do not forsake their belief that theirs is the only true religion, religious violence will continue in India. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Mamata now seeks industry at Singur

Mamata now seeks industry at Singur

New Delhi, Oct 11: With Tata scrapping its Nano car project at Singur, the farmers' land restoration movement spearheaded by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and SUCI is now pushing the West Bengal government to get a fresh industrial project at the Nano site.

A rally with this purpose is planned for Sunday at Singur by the Singur Krishi Jomi Rokkha Committee, which will see participations from both the parties and locals attending.

"The site where the Tata plant has been built is no more arable. So we want the government to get some other industrial project to run from the site," SUCI's state secretary and central committee member Prabhat Bose told PTI on the phone.

"Vendors who had set shop for the Tata project are also under duress as many of them had taken loans and are now not in a position to pay back their dues," he added.

Clearing its stand the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Bannerjee earlier stated that they are not against any industrialisation as long as industry conducts its business alongside agriculture.

Elaborating the future course of the movement Mamata Bannerjee said the demands are now for jobs.

"Where will the landless farmers go now? We want the government to provide jobs for all those who have sacrificed their land for the Tata project and for the local youth," she said on the phone.

"The movement also demands that the government returns the land to all those who had refused compensation. We are standing by our claims," she said.

Mamata, however, refused to comment if the movement is facing any flak from the masses after the Tata project slipped out of the state.

If Mamata Banerjee is to regain any credibility, she should ask the CPM government, now that the Tatas have left, to reconvert the land to arable land and give it back to farmers who did not take any compensation. All who took compensation should be asked to knock on the doors of Tatas for employment. With economic depression a possibility, we should be thinking of agriculture and food for the masses rather than cute little cars for the masses to drive around in. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Shameless Sourav

http://www.ibnlive.com/conversations/thread/75765.html

Sourav's no doubt a great cricketer. But his is certainly not a role model character. He cringed before one and all to get his place back in the team, going all the way up to Sharad Pawar. Now when the writing is clear on the wall that seniors will have to make way for juniors, he quit. And he has begun showing his true character by faulting BCCI. He is, I think, somewhat shameless.

Sourav Ganguly decides to call it a day

Zeenews Bureau

Bangalore, Oct 07: Sourav Ganguly, the most successful player to captain the Indian cricket team, announced he would be retiring after the Test series against Australia. The announcement puts to a close a magnificent career spanning 16 years, filled with milestones that place him among the greats of international cricket.

“I have informed my team-mates that this series would be my last,” an emotional Sourav Ganguly told reporters at a special press conference.

“Thank you all for your support. Hopefully I’ll go on a winning note,” he added.

On being asked about pressure before the series, he said, “Every series has pressures attached to it, you have to play well every time. No one can start as favourites in this series, both have the skills to win.”

He said that when he was a youngster, there were greats of the game like Azharuddin, Ravi Shastri and Kapil Dev and youngsters had to earn their place in the squad. The same is true today. He commended the younger players for doing a great job.

Ganguly, 36, has had a stupendous cricketing career, having scored 6888 runs in 109 Tests including 15 magnificent tons. Besides, he also scored 11363 runs in 311 ODIs with 22 centuries at an outstanding average of 41.02. The southpaw also captained India in 147 ODIs.

Having captained the country in most number of Tests (49), he led India to the most number of victories (21) by any Indian captain with a win percentage of over 40.

Since smashing a hundred on debut at Lord’s, Ganguly has had a phenomenal Test average that has never dipped below the 40 mark.

Head of India’s selection panel Kris Srikkanth said that he felt the former captain made the right decision in the present circumstances.

Talking to a cricket website, Srikkanth said, “I think Sourav Ganguly has been an excellent player. He has brought so many laurels as captain and player.”

"He had a good chat with me and Narendra Hirwani. He wants a peaceful series without any troubles on his mind. I hope he goes out with a couple of hundreds. Ganguly was one of the best captains the world has ever produced and I think he deserves it," Srikkanth added.

Ganguly’s cricketing future had been undecided after the Indian selectors dropped him from the Irani Trophy squad and hinted at his possible exclusion from the Australia series.

Ganguly, however, was picked in the 15 member squad at a selection committee meeting held last week in Mumbai.

Ganguly’s achievements also include being one of only three players to complete the treble of 10000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in one-day internationals.

Ganguly had been in tremendous form with the bat since his comeback in 2006 scoring over one thousand five hundred runs at a staggering average of 50.67. The speculation on his future began after a dismal series in Sri Lanka.

Sourav may be the greatest of cricketers, but the way be cringed before everyone, specially Sharad Pawar, to get his place back in the team showed his lack of character. Now he has finally seen the writing on the wall that the selectors would henceforth go in for the youngsters, he is making a virtue out of a necessity - to retire. Will he back off from his 3 year contract with IPL? No way. Not when there is moolah to be made there!

The new universities will be set up in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Sagar University in Madhya Pradesh, Bilaspur University in Chhattisgarh, Garhwal University in Uttarakhand and Goa University would be upgraded as central universities. Dasmunsi said that a bill would be introduced for this purpose in Parliament.

46 arrested as violence spirals in Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar, Oct 03: Forty-six people have been arrested in the past two days on charges of rioting as violence continues unabated in Orissa's volatile Kandhamal district, where communal clashes have claimed at least 34 people in the past month, police said Friday.

"We have arrested more than 300 people in the past month. Forty-six of them were detained in the past two days," a police official said.

Officials said they are likely to arrest more people in the next few days if the violence does not stop.

Meanwhile, the police have confirmed the rape of a nun in the region two days after the murder of Saraswati. The victim had alleged she had been raped by a mob and a Christian priest who tried to stop the attack was beaten and doused with kerosene.

Over 5,000 security personnel have been deployed in the region. Curfew and prohibitory orders have been clamped in many areas but the violence that erupted after the murder of a Hindu leader in August has not yet been curbed.

On Wednesday, mobs set fire to dozens of houses in the Raikia area of the district. On Thursday, arson and violence spread from Kandhamal to the neighbouring district of Boudh.

"Unidentified people set fire to over a hundred houses of dalit Hindus in at least nine villages in Boudh district," Additional District Magistrate Mihir Chandra Mallik said.

"We have set up a relief camp at Kantamal town to provide food and shelter to the people who have lost their homes," he added.

The state has been witnessing communal violence since Aug 23, when Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides were shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his Jalespata Ashram in Kandhamal district.

The VHP accused Christians of the murders, a charge strongly denied by Christian organisations. Since then, thousands of people have been rendered homeless, many churches attacked and at least 34 people killed in the state.

Orissa is not new to communal violence between Hindus and Christians. On Jan 22, 1999, Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons, 10-year-old Philip and six-year-old Timothy, were burnt alive by a Hindu mob in their vehicle in Keonjhar district. IANS
