I studied in missionary school; I am secular: Advani

Home > Nation

Shillong, Sept 29: Seen as the face of hardline Hindutva, senior BJP leader L K Advani on Monday said he was "very much a secular man" and his party stood for peaceful co-existence of all religious groups. "I studied in a Christian missionary school and I am very much a secular man," a BJP spokesperson quoted Advani as saying during a close-door meeting he had with religious leaders here. Representatives from Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and tribal organizations participated in the meet that was aimed at clarifying the saffron party's stand on the attacks on Christians, churches and prayer halls in Orissa and Karnataka. Quoting the BJP leader, BJP MP, Kiren Rijiju said that "religious sentiment should not precede national interest. India is a secular country and no section of the society should be neglected. "In Orissa, untouchability among the Hindus and a simmering discontent among the lower strata have drawn people to other religions. Social acceptance is a big dilemma there," the BJP leader said. Chief Minister Donkupar Roy and other Christian leaders expressed anguish over the attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka. As the church leaders expressed doubts over the governance of BJP, Advani assured that he had asked the chief ministers of Orissa and Karnataka to institute judicial probes into the incidents and bring the culprits to book. Arjun Singh backs Jamia in supporting blast accused

Zeenews Bureau New Delhi, Sept 26:

Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh on Friday backed Jamia Millia Islamia Vice Chancellor Mushirul Hasan in his efforts to provide legal assistance to the university students detained in connection with the Delhi blasts case. The VC had been asserting that legal assistance is the constitutional right of very citizen. Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof Mushrul Hasan met Singh to apprise him of the decision of the university to provide legal aid to the two students, a move criticised by the BJP. "There is nothing wrong in providing legal aid... In this case, I have got full details. Whatever Mushirul Hasan told me, I understand in this context, the decision of the university is in the interest of the nation," Singh said. BJP has demanded dismissal of the Vice Chancellor and termed the decision as "atrocious, anti-national and highly objectionable". Speaking to reporters after meeting the minister, Hasan said BJP's allegation that the university was diverting the government funds for providing legal aid was "baseless". Incidentally, the 125-member Academic Council (AC) of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has already decided to form a legal aid committee, which will work independently of the university administration. To start with, it would be visiting the students - Mohammad Shakil and Zia-ur Rehman - held for alleged terror activities. "Providing legal aid is the decision of the Academic Council. Legal aid is the constitutional right of every person. We stand by our decision. There is no question of my resignation," Hasan said. Noting that the classes have been running smoothly and the recent incidents have not affected the confidence of students, he said, "the confidence of students has gone up after my interaction and peace march in the campus". Appealing to political parties not to politicise the issue, Hasan said, "if it is politicised, the repercussion will not be good". Asked whether he was facing any threat, Hasan said it should not affect the "principle". Hasan came out strongly against the media for engaging in “stereotyping” of the student community in Jamia by “blowing the issue out of proportion”. “The portrayal will create a particular image of the university in the minds of many people, which will erode our 70-year old record and our contribution to the nation,” Hasan said. Even Jamia Millia Islamia teachers, have formed a "solidarity group" and are leading protest with a campaign based on the natural justice tenet 'innocent till proven guilty'.

Pakistanis say suspected US drone shot down

Islamabad, Sept 24:
Pakistani soldiers and tribesman shot down a suspected US military drone close to the Afghan border Tuesday night, three intelligence officials said.

If verified, it apparently would be the first time a pilotless aircraft was brought down over Pakistan and likely would add to tensions between Washington and Islamabad over recent American cross-border incursions into the country's lawless tribal regions.

The three officials said the aircraft was hit at the village of Jalal Khel in South Waziristan after circling the area for several hours. Wreckage was strewn on the ground, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Pakistan's Army said later that troops recovered the wreckage of an unmanned spy plane near the Afghan border.

The United States challenged the account. "We're not aware of any drones being down," said a senior US official, who speaking on condition of anonymity because of the diplomatic sensitivity of disputing a US ally in the war against terrorist groups.

The report came a day after intelligence officers said two US helicopters crossed a mile into Pakistan late Sunday over North Waziristan, but flew off after Pakistani troops and tribesmen opened fire. The Pentagon denied any incursion by US helicopters.

While causing widespread anger among Pakistanis, the apparent raids by US forces, including missile strikes and a ground assault, have underlined Washington's concerns that the government is unwilling or incapable of rooting out the Taliban and other extremists on the border.

The US is known to operate drones in neighbouring Afghanistan that are sometimes used to conduct surveillance of suspected militant hideouts inside Pakistan and occasionally launch missile attacks on the havens. Washington generally does not acknowledge the strikes, which Pakistani officials say often miss their targets and fuel support for the militants.

South Waziristan and other tribal areas in Pakistan's northwest are a haven for al Qaeda and Taliban militants who cross into Afghanistan to attack American and NATO troops as well as for Pakistani extremists who are striking targets in Pakistan.

Militants with roots in the border region are suspected in Saturday's truck bombing at the Marriott hotel in Islamabad. The attack killed 53 people, among them the Czech ambassador and two US Defence Department employees, and wounded about 270.

Washington wants Islamabad to do more to root out the extremists, but Pakistan says it has deployed tens of thousands of soldiers to the area and they regularly battle insurgents.

In the latest fighting, troops backed by helicopter gunships and artillery killed at least 50 militants in the Kohat region since Monday, an Army spokesman, Maj Murad Khan, said. One solider also died, he said. Khan said the military regained control of a mountain road tunnel seized by insurgents several days ago.

In the nearby Bajur tribal region, security forces killed at least 10 militants Tuesday in the latest round of a major offensive there, government official Iqbal Khattak said.

The surge in violence is the biggest challenge facing Pakistan's new civilian government, which is having to balance Washington's demands against deep unhappiness among his people over the alliance with the United States.

In a speech to Muslim scholars late Tuesday, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani said terrorists are "enemies of Islam with no faith" and vowed to get tough on militants sheltering in the border region.

"We will not allow them to challenge the writ of the government and create a law of the jungle and a life of the Stone Age," he told a gathering of Muslim scholars in the capital, Islamabad.

Meanwhile, at least six people — including a 12-year-old boy — were killed and a bank set afire Tuesday during rioting in Mangora in the northwestern Swat Valley, police and a hospital official said.

It was unclear how the people died, but police said officers fired warning shots trying to control a mob that was protesting the lack of electricity and natural gas. Police officer Mohibullah Khan said militants bombed the local power station and gas pipeline last week.

The bombing of the Marriott continued to affect operations of diplomatic missions, aid groups and other organisations.

British Airways said Tuesday it "indefinitely" suspended flights to Pakistan "in light of the current security situation." A British Embassy spokesman, Aidan Liddle, said a company that runs four visa application centres for the embassy closed them pending a security review.

The US military identified the two Americans killed in the Marriott bombing as Air Force Maj Rodolfo I Rodriguez, 34, of El Paso, Texas, and Navy Petty Officer Matthew O'Bryant, 22, of Theodore, Ala.

In all probability America ‘allowed’ US drone to be shot down by the Pakistanis so that the beleaguered President Zardari might salvage a bit of his pride. But it is too late. Pakistan is going to be done in by Islamic militants and USA together. We are very hurt: Karnataka Archbishop tells CM

Zeenews Bureau

Bangalore, Sept 22: Venting his feelings for the first time in public, an angry Archbishop Bernard Moras told the visiting CM Yedyurappa that he was ‘very hurt’. The CM was visiting the Archbishop after meeting with his cabinet colleagues to assess the situation in the state that saw four more churches being gutted in Bangalore town and Kodagu district on Sunday.

"I am telling you publicly, we are very hurt. We cannot express our feelings," Archbishop Bernard Moras told Yeddyurappa while receiving him at the portico of his residence.

"The whole church in Karnataka is deeply hurt," Archbishop Moras said in an emotionally-choked voice.

He asked what the Chief Minister would feel if "the garbhagudi" (sanctum sanctorum of a temple) is destroyed. "It's Jesus for us. It's God for us," he said.

The Chief Minister tried to assuage his feelings and said "we are taking necessary measures".

Earlier in the day, Karnataka CM called a special cabinet meeting after fresh attacks on three churches in Bangalore on Sunday. Earlier, on September 14, suspected activists of Bajrang Dal attacked at least nine churches in the state as a mark of protest against the alleged conversion of Hindus to Christianity.

Prior to the cabinet meeting, Yeddyurappa went to Raj Bhavan and briefed Governor Rameshwar Thakur on the law and order situation and the steps taken by the government to maintain communal harmony and peace.

The incident in Bangalore comes on the heels of a series of attacks against churches in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. In Rajarajeshwari Nagar of the city, some miscreants pelted stones at a statue in a cave outside the Jesus Church.

Bajrang Dal activist gets bail

Bajrang Dal activist, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the recent attacks on churches in the state, was granted bail by a local court here today.

The court of Judicial Magistrate K S Vijay granted bail to Mahedra Kumar, Bajrang Dal convenor of Karnataka unit, and ordered him to furnish a bond for Rs 10,000.

The court has, however, directed Kumar to appear before the jurisdictional police station on first and 15th of every month.

Kumar, who was arrested on September 19, was remanded to judicial custody till October one.

Just a few Churches attacked and our good Archbishop is hurt. Would he understand how hurt Hindus have been for generations due conversion schemes of the Church? It is best we do not hurt each other. Stop conversions and end the hurt of the Hindus and Christians would have no cause for being hurt by the Hindus. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Pak announces reward of Rs one crore for any info into blast

Islamabad, Sept 21:

Pakistan government has announced a reward of Rs one crore for any information about perpetrators of the deadly suicide truck bombing on the five- star Marriott hotel in which a tonne of explosives was used. The Interior Ministry, in a statement, said that anybody providing information regarding the perpetrators of the last night blast would be rewarded with Rs one crore. The attack at the luxury Marriott hotel, believed to be the most devastating in the Pakistani capital, left 60 people dead and nearly 260 injured. The ministry said additional measures are being taken "to beef up security of public places, government installations and likely targets of terrorist elements". Provincial governments were directed to "review and revisit their security plans," it said. The massive blast last night, in which officials said about 1,000 kilograms of explosives were used, ruptured gas pipelines and triggered a fire that rapidly spread through the five-storey 290-room hotel, which was popular among foreigners. Nation bids tearful adieu to braveheart Inspector Sharma

Nation bids tearful adieu to braveheart Inspector Sharma

Zeenews Bureau New Delhi, Sept 20: Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who succumbed to his injuries sustained during an encounter with terrorists in the capital on Friday, was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat with full police honours on Saturday evening. Prior to the cremation, several dignitaries including Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Chief Minister Shiela Dixit, BJP leader LK Advani, Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal and others paid last tributes to the highly decorated officer. Sharma’s nephew lit the funeral pyre, in the presence of the slain cop’s family members and friends. His ailing son could not make it to his father’s last rites. Earlier in the day, family and friends bid a tearful adieu to Sharma at his residence in Dwarka’s Sector 4. As the body of the 41-year-old was brought to his home in a flower-decked vehicle, family members, neighbours and well wishers started chanting slogans of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai (Long live Mother India)" and "M C Sharma Amar Rahe (Long live M C Sharma)”. A Delhi Police contingent paid a gun salute to the departed officer. Sharma is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His son, who had been admitted to a hospital in Kirti Nagar with Dengue, was also brought home to bid farewell to his father. The body of the slain Inspector was brought from AIIMS, where a postmortem had been conducted, to Sharma's residence. Considered an encounter specialist and posted with the Special Cell, Sharma’s demise came as a shock to the police personnel, after he was heavily injured in the fierce gunbattle with 5 terrorists at the Batla House locality of Jamia Nagar in South Delhi. While two terrorists were killed and another arrested, another two manage to flee the spot. Sharma had received major injuries on his upper abdomen, upper arm, left shoulder and right hip during the encounter. He was taken to the nearby Holy Family Hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries. Expressing shock over the demise of Sharma, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “Sharma was an exceptionally brave officer. He had shown exceptional courage throughout his career and had been decorated with gallantry awards many times. He was an inspiration for our security forces in his life and will continue to inspire them after this demise too. It is officers like your husband who make us all feel confident that our security is in safe hands. Your husband’s passing away is a great loss for our country and society.” In his message, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said, "It is a loss to the country and especially to Delhi police. He was very competent officer." LK Advani, senior leader of BJP, asked, "How long will this process of allowing our brave soldiers and security men to die at the hands of the dastardly assassins, these terrorists continue? Is there going to be an end to this or not?” Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal said Sharma was a highly decorated police officer and had won seven gallantry medals, including a President’s medal for Gallantry. "We have lost our best man," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnail Singh. The year 2008 has brought a double whammy to the anti-terrorist squad of Delhi Police. It has lost two ace sharpshooters - Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rajbir Singh in March and Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma in Friday’s shootout. Both lived by the gun and eventually died by it and together had nearly 90 ‘kills’ to their credit.

Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma died in harness fighting the nation's enemies. A new chapter on such bravehearts should be included in school text books so that the younger generations grow up honouring the valour of such heroes by themselves becoming ever ready to defend the integrity of our nation. Inspector Sharma's family must be suitably rewarded by a grateful nation.

Existing terror laws needs to be made more stringent: Dasmunshi

Zeenews Bureau New Delhi, Sept 18:

Under scathing attacks from all quarters for its 'inept' handling of the internal security situation, the Centre announced a slew of measures to beef up the security apparatus in the country. Central to the new plan would be to ensure better coordination between different intelligence agencies and the state police to ensure a unified approach to terror. However, the government appears to be divided over the need for stringent laws to fight terror as Union Minister Priyaranjan Das Munshi, while addressing a press conference along with Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, said that there is no need for specialised terror law. “Laws like POTA were "absolutely draconian". Instead there is a need to strengthen existing laws,” added Munshi. Interestingly, his views are in contradiction to Administrative Reforms Commission chairman and Congress spokesperson Veerappa Moily’s view that there is a need for special laws to tackle terror. Madhukar Gupta elaborated on the slew of measures planned by the government. He revealed that an additional 6,712 posts and 130 vehicles have been sanctioned for Delhi Police as the national capital perpetually remains the prime terror target. He revealed that more CCTVs have been approved for IB. Moreover, 58 markets and 27 border posts in the national capital will be brought under CCTV coverage in a time-bound manner. In view of the need to keep the intelligence agencies up-to-date, Gupta also announced the setting up of a new research and technology centre within the Intelligence Bureau.

Wahid, The question is do u consider yourself Indian? If yes, then U would also have questions about the terrorism and U are expected to condemn it publicly and if u do not, then u have no business to comment on laws requirements. - Pankaj - Ahmedabad
They (UPA and their chamchas) said terrorists are targetting only BJP ruled states as they are communal. When terrorists stick a bomb right below their a**, they come to know what terrorism really is and go blah-blahing about stringent laws. - Raman - Benagluru
Mr. WAHIID, I will agree with you, if you extend your demand to file FIR aganst those who created circumstances, Announcements from Mosques in 1990s that drove out thousands of PANDITS living in the Valley since the recorded History of 400AD (Chinese Traveller HUEN TSANG). Where is the FIR against those who flys PAKISTANI FLAGS in the streets of Kashmir and celebrates 14th August rather 15th August? Where is the FIR against those who had given shelter, information, money to Terrorists fighting in the name of JEHAD? Where is the FIR against those who were razing down temples in 1992 ? Where is FIR against those who destroyed Indian Property and lives in Kashmir when General Zia of Pak hanged Bhutto and years later again damage of Indian Property and Lives when the same ZIA died in an air crash ? - Ran Avtar - Chandigarh
You got the laws but laws need to be executed in an effective and fair manner. There is a state sponsored terrorism in Kashmir. Indian forces have killed more than hundred thousand people in Kashmir, 50 in just last two months. Don’t you see it as the state terrorism? It is like criminals and judges sharing same positions in Kashmir. Whether the laws need to be strict for saving the innocent people from the terrorists or to kill them under the campaign of “war on terrorism”. For the past two decades, thousands of F.I.R reports were registered in Kashmir against the atrocities done by Indian forces. Hundreds of committees were formed to investigate into such cases but nothing was done on the ground level. Indian forces are having free hand to kill the innocent Kashmir’s at their will. - Wahiid - Kashmir
This zig-zag attitude of the UPA govt.on the stringent laws is a case of very poor administration, just keeping aim on the vote bank and not the security of the nation. With this divided attitude and not aiming control on terror, but going wayward is leading to nowhere. It is the execution of the law and not the law itself. Are terrorists not draconians, when they are killing innocents?.Are there no cases of human rights when existing IPC laws are applied? - V.M.Puri - Faridabad
Do anything for these muslims, they will remain unhappy. See pak, kangladesh, afganistan they are in majority, are they happy? Congress is a party of anti-national now. Hell to congress. Hell to these anti-national. - Rajiv - Delhi
Continuance in power of the UPA is more dangerous than the Al-Queda. Let all right-thinking and patriotic persons pray that the UPA be out of power for ever as soon as possible. - siddhartha - kolkata

Why is UPA shy of bringing back POTA but talking of making existing laws tougher? Because they do not want to upset Muslims but at the same time want tougher laws to use against Hindu activists who are opposing Christian conversions. POTA free terrorists target Hindus. More stringent laws to target Hindus. Minority wins, majority loses. Welcome to the world of Indian secularism. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Cong demands BJP govt in K’taka to invoke KCOCA

Bangalore, Sept 17:

Congress on Wednesday demanded that the BJP government in Karnataka invoke the state's stringent law--the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA)--against the perpetrators of attack on churches and prayer halls. "BJP has been talking about restoration of POTA and the central approval of Gujarat's GUJCOC. The KCOCA is right here in operation in Karnataka. Why has the government not invoked it against those who attacked churches? How many have been arrested under this Act", Congress spokesman M Veerappa Moily said at a press conference here. Terming the attacks by suspected Bajrang Dal activists as "pre-planned, well targeted and deliberate", Moily charged the BJP government with trying to prop up a "new theory" that forcible conversions were on to justify the attack. The government itself is responsible for creating a situation of anarchy and administration was interfering with the functioning of police, he alleged. The Centre would take "tough" action upon receiving reports from National and state Human Rights Commission and also by National Commission for Women, he said but did not specify the nature of action. Asked whether the Centre will ban Bajrang Dal, he said "anything can happen including banning Bajrang Dal". Moily, who heads the AICC Media cell, sought to brand the Vijay Sankalpa Yatra being undertaken by BJP leader LK Advani as "Ayodhya Yatra No.2". He urged the BS Yeddyurappa government to "halt attacks on Christians immediately." Bureau Report

Sure, Congress wants to prove itself more loyal than loyalist Christian Sonia Gandhi. When bombs exploded in Bangalore did Congress ask that KCOCA be invoked? No, because Congress does not want Muslim heads, it only wants Hindu heads to place in a platter before Sonia Gandhi so that conversions can continue unquestioned all over India. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Conversion won’t be allowed at any cost: K’taka CM

Zeenews Bureau Bangalore, Sept 17:

A day after promising strict action against those responsible for attack on churches in the state, Karantaka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday hit out against conversion and said that these won’t be allowed at any cost. The Chief Minister also rejected demands for a judicial probe into the violence against Christians that has engulfed the state. Echoing Yeddyurappa’s views, state Home Minister VS Acharya said that everyone is free to practice his or her religion but added that conversion is against Constitution. Meanwhile, communal violence continues unabated in Karnataka. In fresh incident of violence, a mob attacked a church today damaging property in the Kolar district. The situation is tense and the security has been stepped up. The New Life Sect has refuted Bajrang Dal accusations that it had circulated pamphlets, which questioned the existence of Hindu Gods. The violence had begun after the pamphlets were distributed. Yesterday, police cane charged the protesters belonging to fringe Hindu group Shri Ram Sena during the bandh organised by them. Interestingly, the Bajrang Dal has distanced itself from the bandh and has stated that it has no association with the Shri Ram Sena. Nearly 40 people have been injured in clashes since Sunday. On Monday, police burst teargas shells and cane-charged to disperse members of the Christian community, after their protest against attacks on prayer halls in the state allegedly turned violent. Till now 53 persons have been arrested in connection with attacks on churches.

Religious conversions are pernicious. Those who indulge in it believe that one religion alone is right and the others are wrong. Of course, everyone has the right to practice whichever religion s/he wishes. But the social act of conversion is a public demonstration of rejection of other religions. No one has the right to reject any religion publicly. It is tantamount to foisting an individual’s personal preference as a statement of right and wrong in religious matters, when it is well-known that religions are only beliefs and one belief is as good as another, so long as such beliefs do not lead to disharmony in society. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

We salute U CM. Keep it up. These christian missionarys cunningly convert poor and innocent people. Showing them sympathy, promising next place to God and bribing them they carry their evil design. It has to stopped at any cost. They even distribute the pamphlets in Hindu temple festivals. They try in Dubai also to convert the Hindu labourers. They can NOT do with Muslim workers, their heads will be rolled down. Once again we salute U Mr. CM, please take strong action against conversion.Millons with U long live Hindustan. - Kumar - Dubai

Government willing to revive POTA: Shivraj Patil

Zeenews BureauNew Delhi, Sept 16:

Home Minister Shivraj Patil, talks of whose resignation have been doing the rounds ever since Delhi was rocked by serial blasts on September 13, told in an interview to a news channel that the Government was willing to revive POTA or bring in a law like it if there was support for it in the Parliament. He said that POTA or a similar law can be considered in the Parliament, and if there was support of the members of Parliament it could be passed—it could be done even by moving a private members Bill. POTA was scrapped in September 2004, as the first major policy decision of the UPA Government. On his continuing as the Home Minister, despite severe pressure from all quarters, Shivraj Patil said that he was not considering resignation since the Congress leadership was supporting him. He took exception to the criticism over his changing clothes thrice while appearing before the media on Saturday after the Delhi blasts and said, you criticise a person’s policies, not his clothes. Noting that there was no point staying on in the post if the leadership was not with him, Patil said, "I am not in much demand. I am here just because of them (leadership).” "I have no group either...It's only that the leadership supports me that I continue to stay here," he said. Responding to the criticism, he said, "I live in a clean, neat manner. If I don't get angry with the people. If I keep my cool when it is necessary to keep cool.... When such incidents happen, you find fault with me. And if they are doing it, do you expect me to reply to that kind of criticism". The Home Minister further said, "I will leave it to the people to judge. You judge yourself. Is this the correct way of criticising a politician....".

Church attack in Mangalore

http://mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=broadcast&broadcastid=93120

Christian missionaries are past-masters in conversions. Why should not Hindus, who are the primary target of conversions, worry about this demographic attack upon them? As Hindus get more organized, violence against those who poach their community would become more and more inevitable. Either the Christians should convert the Hindus faster than the Hindus organize or they have to face the wrath of a majority community. The best solution would be for both communities to come together in fraternity and this would be possible only if Christians give up on conversions and instead simply seek to share the joy of Christ with everyone, without any demographic motives. Then no doubt Hindus would keep their doors wide open to welcome the Christians as one more of the innumerable communities the Hindus have accommodated down through the millennia.

Don`t indulge in forcible conversion: Karnataka CM

Bangalore, Sept 15: Karnataka

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday urged Christian missionaries not to go for forcible conversion saying there is no room for such actions in a democracy.

"There is no room for forcible conversion in democracy. No one should indulge in it", he said.

Yeddyurappa appealed to people to maintain calm and asserted that action would be taken against those responsible for the attacks on churches in Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

His remarks came in the wake of attacks on prayer halls of Christians in Mangalore and Udupi districts.

Yeddyurappa held a meeting with state's Home Minister Dr V S Acharya, Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao and top officials of the Home Department to review the situation in the trouble-hit districts.

Parts of Mangalore have been witnessing violent protests with Christians allegedly indulging in stone-pelting to protest the attack on churches and prayer halls on Sunday.

Bureau Report

I think it would be more correct to call it 'temptation conversions' rather than 'forcible conversions'. Force is not a tactic the Christian missionaries use to convert majority communities. They offer all sorts of temptations and inducements and financial and material assistance, capped by religious allurements - like a gate-pass entry into heaven by believing in Jesus. Forcible conversions take place in places where they are already a majority - in the North East, for instance, where their tactic is violent denationalization of communities already reduced to minority through previous efforts of inducements.

Whatever the Christian tactic, the Hindus have to realize the threat Christian missionaries and Islamic Mullahs pose. Both are heavily subsidized in their activities by the secular ruling elite. Violence against the Hindus would end only if the Hindus demonstrate that they are not averse to violence to protect their demography.

US authorises ground raids into Pak: Report

Washington, Sept 11:

US President George W Bush has secretly approved orders allowing US forces to conduct ground operations in Pakistan without the government's prior approval, a report said on Wednesday citing senior US officials. A newspaper reported that the July move allowing Special Operations forces to carry out assaults within the borders of a key "war on terror" ally marked a turn for the Bush administration, which has struggled with Islamabad over how to combat al Qaeda and a resurgent Taliban. "The situation in the tribal areas is not tolerable," a senior American official told the paper on condition of anonymity. "We have to be more assertive. Orders have been issued." According to the newspaper, US officials say they will notify Pakistan when the United States conducts operations on the country's territory, but that they will not ask for permission. The newspaper reported that US officials have been debating for month whether to authorise such forays against Islamic militants in Pakistan, following US intelligence warnings that al Qaeda and other militant groups were consolidating their hold on north-western Pakistan. The report comes a week after a cross-border raid allegedly by US-led coalition troops based in neighbouring Afghanistan the left 15 people dead. Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani on Wednesday strongly criticised the raids and said the country would defend its sovereignty "at all cost." "The sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country will be defended at all cost and no external force is allowed to conduct operations inside Pakistan," he said in a statement. He said there was no "agreement or understanding with the coalition forces whereby they are allowed to conduct operations on our side of the border," according to the statement issued by the military's media wing. Kayani regretted the civilian deaths in the September 4 raid and said such "reckless actions only help the militants and further fuel the militancy in the area." A recent series of missile strikes targeting rebels in Pakistan has been attributed to US-led coalition forces or Central Intelligence Agency drones based in Afghanistan. There are about 70,000 international forces deployed under NATO and a separate US-led coalition in Afghanistan in an effort to help local forces repel the Islamist rebels. Bureau Report

We were once talking of hot-pursuit. Subsequently all was forgotten in the pursuit of friendship with Pakistan. However, Pakistan has neither forgotten nor given up its attempts to fragment India any which way it can and supports Kashmir separatists and all other insurgencies in India. We must destroy Pakistan’s capacity to do this, in whichever way we can. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai

Taking cue from the USA, India must also follow USA and secretly approve Indian Forces to conduct Ground Operations in Pak-Occupied Kashmir to crush Terrorists camps. India must restraint not to step in the PAKistan but it must limit to Pak-Occupied Kashmir only. This will save precious lives of innocent Indians. - Arvind Sharma - Delhi

Approval of GUJCOC will be against UPA`s policy

Approval of GUJCOC will be against UPA`s policy

Ahmedabad, Sept 10: The Union Home Ministry, in an affidavit filed in Gujarat High Court on GUJCOC, on Wednesday said that recommending the passage of the legislation would be against the policy of the Central government which has repealed POTA.

The court had asked the Union Home Ministry to give its reply on a petition of an NGO, Justice on Trial regarding the delay in the clearance of GUJCOC (Gujarat Control of Organised Crime) Bill which has been passed by state legislative Assembly.

The affidavit submitted in the court said that the executive at the national level cannot recommend the passage of the Bill by the state legislature if a law of the same nature has been repealed by the union legislature.

The affidavit also said that it has been concluded during the detailed examination that it would not be in consonance with the policy of the Central Government which led to repeal of POTA, to recommend the passage of any such legislation, which contains similar provisions.

The affidavit further said the proposal of the state government has been submitted for consideration of the Cabinet and it is expected that the decision on it will be taken in near future.

Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice M S Shah after listening to submission by the lawyer of Central Government Harin Rawal regarding the affidavit has kept the next hearing of the case after one month.

The petition filed by NGO said that GUJCOC Bill, a tougher law against organized crime and terrorism, passed by the state legislative Assembly is pending with the Centre government for clearance.

Petition said other states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi have such laws, but the UPA government is not allowing such a law for Gujarat.

The petition said that the UPA government is saying that they will not place this law before the President for her assent as it is against their political philosophy.

How can a law passed by elected representatives of a state of India be blocked on the basis of political ideology of a party, the petition asked.

If such laws are against their political ideology then why they are not taking any steps to revoke the same kind of laws which are existing in other states, the petition said.

In the backdrop of the recent terror attack in Ahmedabad it has become necessary that state has such tough law to fight terrorism, it said.

Chiru attends inter-caste marriage, sparks row

Hyderabad: Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi is caught in a controversy after he attended an inter-caste wedding that triggered objections from the bride's family.
The occasion was the marriage of noted Dalit activist-writer K Padma Rao's son Chetan with Nalini, a 24-year-old engineer from an upper caste.
The matinee idol attended the wedding, held at Film Nagar Club last Saturday, and blessed the couple. He also spoke spiritedly about the virtues of inter-caste marriages and the need for creating a casteless society.
The film star's presence at the Dalit boy's wedding led to a bitter row with the bride's parents who alleged their daughter was forced into the wedlock and kept in confinement by the family of the Dalit writer and with the "active support of the actor".
Incidentally, Padma Rao had recently joined Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam party, whose main plank is social justice.
Accusing the actor of staging a drama only to gain political mileage for his newly-launched party, Nalini's parents T Subba Rao and T Mani pointed out how Chiranjeevi himself had disapproved of his teenage daughter's proposal to marry her lover outside the caste.
They went to a local television channel with their version of the story and made allegations against the actor and the Dalit writer.
Last year, Chiranjeevi's daughter Sreeja eloped with her lover and got married, leading to a public showdown between the father and the daughter.

Chiranjeevi is talking about a casteless society and applauding an inter-caste marriage when he was against his own daughter's inter-caste marriage. Chiranjeevi is certainly a hypocrite.

N-deal: India allays NSG`s proliferation fears

Zeenews Bureau New Delhi, Sept 05:

India on Friday issued suo moto statement to allay NSG fears. “India is committed to concluding the Fissile Material Cut off Treaty (FMCT),” External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said. The statement of New Delhi came as the NSG meeting for a waiver to India for nuclear commerce underway in Vienna. He assured the world community that India will not be a source of proliferation of sensitive technologies, including enrichment and reprocessing transfers. Mukherjee noted that New Delhi remained committed to a voluntary, unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing. "We do not subscribe to any arms race, including nuclear arms race. We have always tempered the exercise of our strategic autonomy with a sense of global responsibility. We affirm our policy of no-first-use of nuclear weapons". "We stand for the strengthening of the non-proliferation regime...," Mukherjee said. Mukherjee's remarks come in the backdrop of some members of the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) expressing concern over giving India a waiver for conducting nuclear trade. Assuring the international community about working for a non-proliferation regime, the Minister said New Delhi is "interested in participating as a supplier nation, particularly for Thorium-based fuel and in establishment of international fuel banks, which also benefit India." US expects India to stick to moratorium on nuclear tests Meanwhile, the United States has made it clear it expects India to adhere to its unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing, but would not spell out whether it would cut off supplies in the event of India doing so. "I think, certainly, India's obligations under the ... 123 agreement are very clear and that the Indians have agreed to a moratorium on testing. And we expect that they will adhere to that commitment," State Department Deputy Spokesman Robert Wood told reporters on Thursday. Asked if this response to the question whether a nuclear weapons test by India would trigger a suspension of supplies and technology from the US and other countries under the India-US nuclear deal did not indicate some ambiguity, he said: "What I'd encourage you to do is to read the agreement."
