Scars of 1962 war should not be forgotten: Bhagwat

October 28, 2009 23:04 IST

Rashtriya Swamyamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said if India wished to carve its own identity vis-a-vis China, it should not forget the scars of the 1962 war though the present situation was different.
The RSS has been critical of India's stand against China during the past few months which has witnessed increase in incursions by the neighbouring country in Arunachal Pradesh and which had also raised objections to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's [ Images ] visit to the state.
"We (India) are in competition with them (China)... scars should not always be forgotten," Bhagwat said.
Giving an analogy in which a driver insists to continue driving even after meeting with an accident as if he stopped driving he would live with the fear in the future, Bhagwat said, "Though the 1962 days were different, what has to be forgotten should be, but what has to be remembered (scars) should not be forgotten... There is a clash between India and China."
He said India should realise that after 1962 China had gained a lot in the international fora through good relations. India too should master the Chinese 'Art of War' and gain power without going to war, he suggested.
Bhagwat said India should strive to carve a separate identity for itself instead of emulating China or US. "India should say it wants to become India," he said.
Bhagwat invoked Swami Vivekananda's thoughts to say that India was a power, which could not keep itself aloof from international politics and should play a vital role in it. However, he said honest debate and "merciless introspection" was very important for the country to progress.
He lamented that in India people debated for the sake of debating. The exercise should lead to some solution, he added.
Bhagwat said he was not opposed to democracy or debates. "While India had known social untouchability, an ideological untouchability is now creeping in," he lamented.
BJP, RSS downplay 'chemotherapy' controversy
Meanwhile, both the RSS and the Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] went on a damage control mode a day after Bhagwat suggested "surgery" or "chemotherapy" for BJP's revival and Rajanth Singh's unsavoury response.
Bhagwat clarified that he had only meant that it was for the BJP to decide whether it needed "chemotherapy" or 'surgery" in the backdrop of its Lok Sabha debacle.
"I did not say chemotherapy is needed (by BJP), but you know what happens in the media. Now I do not even want to clarify. The news channel has clarified the issue. By now, the clarification is there even on our website," Bhagwat said.
He was speaking at the book release function of former Panchajanya editor Tarun Vijay's book 'India Battles to Win'.
While Rajnath Singh on Wednesday denied having made any adverse comments against Bhagwat saying he was a "Swayamsewak" first.
"It pained me when I saw (reports attributed to him) on the television last night and in newspapers today, which said I have reacted to Bhagwat's statement," Singh said in Nagpur.
Singh, who was in Maharashtra to felicitate the newly elected BJP Members of Legislative Assembly, said there was no question of his having questioned whatever Bhagwat had said, "since I am a Swayamsewak first".
"The so-called secular forces are trying to divide the Sangh Parivar, but will never succeed in their evil designs," he said.

The RSS Sarsanghchalak mentioned about chemotherapy only in response to a question in the context of Shatrugnan Sinha's earlier comment that BJP needed an operation. Mohan Bhagwat said that what the BJP needs, whether operation of chemotherapy, is for the BJP to decide. Naturally, this has been the consistent position. As to Rajnath's response, to which question he was responding is not clear. And he certainly would not have meant the RSS leader when he said only a mad man would suggest operation. The relationship swayamsevaks have with the Sarsanghchalak is one of utmost respect.

Ex Top Cop sniffs conspiracy in Karkare's death

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=68024§ionid=4&issueid=111&Itemid=1

Hemant Karkare met his nemesis due to his evil Karma of showing pornography to a Sanyasini. Normally Karma does not bear fruition so fast, but since a holy person was trespassed upon, the retribution was swift. No just in Karkare's killing, but that Islamic terrorists struck so openly and plainly prevented secular politicians and media from blaming this terrorist attack on Hindu terrorists. After the Malegaon blast, it was taken for granted by many that all blasts in India could henceforth be blamed on Hindu terrorism. The Malegaon blast was actually part of a counter terrorism strategy announced by Indian Intelligence against Islamic terrorism and not an isolated Hindu right wing backlash.

Certain elements within the Congress are bent on weakening nationalistic forces in India. This has become plain when the present Congress government compromised its intelligence activities in Baluchistan during the recent Egyptian summit. Those who did not oppose India’s partition are now allowing anti-Indian forces to strengthen itself in the Indian sub-continent.

'Muslims should hold marriages in mosques, imambaras'

Updated on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 18:53 IST Tags:Muslim, Marriage

Lucknow: With a view to checking ostentatious display of wealth, All India Shia Personal Law Board (AISPLB) today suggested using mosques and imambaras for holding marriage functions.

The board in its annual session in New Delhi later this month would be passing a resolution to this effect for making it mandatory for the community to use mosques and imambaras for holding 'nikahs' so as to check unnecessary expenditures, AISPLB president Maulana Mirza Mohamad Athar told reporters here.

There has been a growing trend among the community of solemnising weddings at banquet halls or hotels which add on to the burden on the bride's family, he said, adding this could be checked by using imambaras and mosques, which have ample land in and around, for holding such ceremonies.

Athar said there is no ban on holding such functions at mosques and imambaras and if brought into practice it will also narrow the gap between the rich and poor.

He said the annual meeting of the Shia Board on Oct 25 would also press on checking the practice of dowry. The practice of organising community feast after burial should also be stopped as it poses unnecessary burden on the poor.

The national policy for Shias and reservation for the community in Parliament are also some of the issues which will be discussed in the meet, he said.

Bureau Report

Restricting ostentation at marriages is one thing the Hindus also should emulate.

Twin blasts in Islamabad, many feared dead, scores injured

Islamabad: The Pakistan capital was on Tuesday shaken by twin blasts triggered by suspected Taliban suicide bombers at an elite Islamic university, killing at least five people, including two women, and injuring 40 others, the latest in a string of terror attacks across the country.

The bombers strapped with explosives blew themselves up within seconds of each other in separate male and female campuses of International Islamic University, as Pakistani military continued a major anti-Taliban offensive in the restive Waziristan region in the country's northwest.

The blasts, the first such attack against a civilian institution, occurred shortly after 3.15 pm local time when thousands of students, including foreigners, were present in the university's sprawling campus spread over 700 acres.

However, there was no detail about any foreigner being killed. Students from countries like China, Sudan and Somalia are pursuing their studies in the university, considered one of the world's leading centres for studies in Islamic law, thought and history.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack but Interior Minister Rehman Malik said "all roads led to South and North Waziristan," a Taliban stronghold where the army launched its operation over the weekend.

The first bomber detonated his explosives at the entrance of a crowded cafeteria in the women's campus, killing two female students and an employee of the university. Several people were injured by shards of glass from shattered windows and pellets packed into the bomber's suicide jacket.

The second attacker blew himself up on the first floor of the Shariah law faculty in the male campus, killing two persons and injuring several others.

Police arrested two men near the cafeteria soon after the attacks. They were taken away to an unknown location for questioning.

Five bodies and body parts of the two bombers were taken to two hospitals close to the university, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Rana Akbar Hayat.

The university has been closed down till Saturday and the students have begun leaving their hostels.

Malik said the bombers were able to enter the university's campus due to an "internal security lapse."

"We had asked all educational institutions to maintain internal security," he told reporters.

Today's terrorist strike was the first one in a campaign of audacious bombings and suicide attacks unleashed by the Taliban that targeted a civilian institution.

Over the past two weeks, Taliban suicide bombers have struck the UN food agency's office in Islamabad and security and police buildings in Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi, including the army's heavily-fortified General Headquarters.

The brick walls of the International Islamic University were blackened by the two blasts. At the cafeteria, witnesses said they had seen parts of the bomber's body stuck to the ceiling.

Glass from smashed windows, shoes and clothes lay strewn over the bloodstained floor of the cafeteria. Several cars parked outside were also damaged by the blast.

At the site of both blasts, the walls and ceiling were pockmarked by pellets and shrapnel packed into the suicide bombers' jackets.

The Interior Minister said the bombers had proved by attacking the Islamic University that "they are not friends of Islam or Pakistan."

"They are testing the nerves of the nation. Pakistan is in a state of war and our forces are fighting on the border. (The militants) will make efforts to destabilise Pakistan," Malik said.

He said security would be further enhanced across the federal capital. He added that he had convened a meeting of heads of schools and colleges to review security at the institutions.

"We may consider closing the institutions if we think the situation is worsening or threat level is increasing," he said.

Hours after the attacks, authorities in southern Sindh province closed all education institutions till Sunday.

All educational institutions run by the military were recently closed for a week due to threats that militants could target them or hijack buses transporting students. Numerous private schools in cities across Pakistan have also been closed.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the terrorist attack at the International Islamic University.

Zardari said the operation against terrorists in Waziristan and other areas will continue "till their complete elimination."

Gilani said the "perpetrators of such heinous crimes would not be spared."

Observers said the terrorist campaign of bombings appeared to be aimed at creating fear among the people and pressuring the weakened civilian government to end the military offensive against militants in South Waziristan, the main stronghold of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Bureau Report

Why would Islamists want to attack Islamic institutions? Institutions which one would have thought would be their recruiting grounds. Could be an ISI plot to blame India and take Pakistan to war with India.

Self-rule formula to solve Kashmir problem: Mehbooba Mufti

20/10/2009
Srinagar: Speaking in support of her party's self-rule formula, opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti Tuesday said the self-rule document was "a step forward towards the solution of the Kashmir problem".
Addressing a press conference here, she also accused Jammu and Kashmir's ruling National Conference-Congress alliance of misgovernance in the state.
The PDP self-rule document envisages more powers to the state in administrative, political and economic terms.
When asked to confirm media reports that her father and former chief minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed had recently termed the PDP's self-rule document as "virtual Azadi", the PDP chief said: "Self-rule means freedom to and freedom from".
"When movement of people is freely allowed between parts of the state, it means freedom to move, and when the people are rid of the present siege from within it means freedom from such shackles," she said.
Attacking the state government, Mehbooba Mufti said the crime rate during the NC-Congress rule in the state had gone up.
She said the district police chiefs of Jammu and Shopian districts had to be placed under arrest for their alleged involvement in criminal cases.
"Minor boys are detained under the harsh Public Safety Act (PSA) and the crime rate has registered an increase during the NC rule here," she charged.
The Leader of Opposition in the state accused the government of "using the police as a political tool".
She also said there had been widespread unrest during the present government's rule, quoting the examples of the doctors' strike and the virtual lockout in the state road transport corporation.
"Most of the demands of the striking doctors are genuine and can be met without any administrative problems. The government is not even talking to the striking doctors," she said.
Naem Akhter, party spokesman, elaborating on the party's document of self-rule said: "Self-rule would actually be a de facto Azadi for the people of Kashmir."
"The prime minister of the country has said that the constitution of the country is vast enough to provide for such things," Akhter said.

India is a democracy and thereby already has a self-rule in place. What this woman has in mind is a step towards secession. Indian government should not entertain any such talk.

NANDAN NILEKANI ON UID

Unique ID number: How you will gain from it
New Delhi: The 16-digit Unique Identification number that the Government proposes to give you could become mandatory for opening a bank account, getting your passport or even your driving licence, among others.
The Unique Identification Number (UID) scheme, which is expected to roll out the first number in 12-18 months, however, will not confer on anyone any rights, including citizenship, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman Nandan Nilekani said.
Stressing that the UID at present is completely voluntary, Nilekani, the Infosys co-founder who quit the IT firm to head the ambitious Government project, said the number will become "pervasive and ubiquitous" in future.
"When you to get a passport, they will say where is your UID number, when you go to get a driving licence, they will say where is your UID number, when you go to tax, they will say where is your UID number, you go to open a bank account, they will say where is your UID number. Sooner or later you will have to get your UID number," Nilekani said.
He said that in the coming years, all the above mentioned documents will start displaying the UID number, which proposes to weed out duplicate identities in the system, and hence the "number will become pervasive and ubiquitous. It will become embedded in all these documents."
Rs 120 cr to be spent on Unique Identity Cards
K'taka to get first batch of Unique ID cards: Nilekani
ID project a challenge but worth the risk: Nilekani
He said, "It is not mandatory but more applications will make it a prerequisite. So sooner or later your life becomes simpler if you have the number."
Nilekani said talks are already on with various agencies and ministries and that "everybody is ready to partner with us on this and use our UID number in their database."
He said that UID will also help to check black money and result in higher tax collections as it will become difficult to have duplicate accounts.
"Once the bank accounts start having the UID, then you can't keep unaccounted money in the banking system. UID will sort of act as a check on keeping black money and all that. It will also strengthen security," he said.
Nilekani said it will take "years and not one day" for the entire process to change. He said about 600 million of the about 1.2 billion population will be covered under the project in the next five years.
Asked by when could banks start having UID as a necessary feature to open accounts, he said, "that will be the choice of the individual agencies. We are providing a infrastructure. It is up to the ministry or the relevant departments to decide those things."
Explaining further, he said, "For example, RBI is the authority to decide when UID will be used for bank accounts. We are just giving this facility. So they will decide saying from this date onwards, new bank accounts must have UID. From this date, people having old bank accounts must come and upgrade with UID. These are decisions taken by them. We can't dictate those things."
Asked how many agencies have agreed to partnering with his office, he said, "In fairness, everybody that we have met has agreed. They are all ready to come on board. All the agencies have agreed to be our partners."

If this project succeeds, Nandan Nilkeni should be awarded Bharath Ratna.

According to initial reports, explosives were planted in a car parked near a wall of the station which was demolished in the blast. Several people including inmates were wounded in the incident. The causality figures are likely to go up, reports said.
The blast comes a day after the audacious terror attacks in Pakistan -- three in the country's cultural and political hub of Lahore and one each in the northwestern cities of Peshawar and Kohat -- that left 41 people dead and several others injured.

It is clear that that the many organisations in Pakistan that go in the name of Islam are waging war against the state because they are convinced that the state is not being true to the promise of Pakistan at the time of its creation - that it would be a pure state of Islam. This was the implicit idea even though Jinnah sought to secularise the polity once Pakistan was formed. The formation of Pakistan failed to take into account that it inherited an army that was formed, trained and run on principles of the British army and it continued to be a professional force that did not have the ideal of an Islamic state as its motivation. So it is no wonder that Islamists feel betrayed by the state of Pakistan and have now waged an all out war against it. Eventually the forces of Islam must prevail because none of the players in the Pakistani power game are anti Islam though the state appears not to be dedicated to Islam. And, as promised by the Jihadis, once a Taliban like force takes over Pakistan, they would train their guns on India. The consequences would be earth shattering.

Sapthathi of Sreedharan Thanthrikal observed

First Published : 13 Oct 2009 12:18:00 AM IST

PARAVOOR: Sreedharan Thanthrikal could successfully fight against the social evils and motivate youngsters about their rights and responsibilities, said Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi here on Sunday.
He was inaugurating the valedictory function organized to felicitate thanthric and jyothisha scholar Sreedharan Thanthrikal on the occasion of his sapthathi celebrations.
Various seminars and workshops were held on different subjects as part of the the five-day celebrations, which began on Wednesday.
Astrology (`jyothisham’) and thanthric scholars have accepted Sreedharan Thanthrikal as an unquestionable authority in the field, said Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas.
V D Satheesan MLA presided over the meeting. Fisheries Minister S Sarma, SNDP Yogam secretary Vellappally Natesan, K P Dhanapalan MP, Hindu Aykyavedi state general secretary Kummanam Rajasekharan, Mathrubhoomi Daily managing editor P V Chandran, SNM College former principal Geetha Suraj and municipal chairman N A Alim, among others, offered felicitations.
Sreedharan Thanthrikal, in his address said that the vision and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru had influenced him and the Guru’s blessings were there behind all his achievements.
Office-bearers of more than 200 temples where Sreedharan Thanthrikal had served as the thantri, presented offerings to him.

Sreedharan Thanthrikal became an Hindu icon when he performed the pooja for Vishal Hindu Samelan held in the early 1980s alongwith the Thantri from the legendary Suryakaladi Mana. This was a moment of great significance as till then due to caste restrictions such collaborations were almost unheard of. The credit for bringing the two titans in the field of thantra has to go to Madhavaji, the late leader of the RSS in Kerala. Sreedharan Thanthrikal’s brother was a Sanyasi and was associated with Vishva Hindu Parishad.

Advani won't head BJP in 2014 polls: Naidu

NAIDU ON BJP LEADERSHIP
Press Trust Of India
Published on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 15:31, Updated on Thu, Oct 08, 2009 at 16:06 in Politics » Political News section
New Delhi: Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president M Venkaiah Naidu said the party will not contest the next Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of LK Advani.
He emphasised that it would be logical for the party to get a new leadership at that juncture.
“Advani is not going to contest the next General Elections (2014). We are not going to fight the next elections under his leadership,” Naidu told Karan Thapar on Devil’s Advocate.
He was replying to a question on whether the BJP would contest the next General Elections under Advani's leadership, who would be 87-year-old in 2014.
Naidu said that by next General Elections, the BJP would need a new leader and for this the of guard would have to take place couple of years before the polls.
 The fall and fall of Advani: Ready for a forced exit?
Asked who would be the next leader, he said, “Political parties discuss issues and then come to conclusions according to the need of the hour and by consensus”.
The Rajya Sabha MP said Advani had been chosen as the Leader of Opposition by BJP for the 15th Lok Sabha and it was for him to decide when to step down.
“Whenever he (Advani) wants to make way for others, it is his choice. Nobody has given him any deadline,” Naidu said.
Naidu justified that Advani didn’t want to continue as the head of the BJP parliamentary party and that he was persuaded to do.
“When you lose an election and that too for the second time there will be certain amount of demoralisation, so we wanted him (Advani) to guide. The process of leadership change is a normal process. So, when he wants to choose a new leader, it will be announced by Advani,” he said.
On the recent controversy created by Advani’s statement that he did not want expulsion of Jaswant Singh, Naidu said, “Initially, yes, he was opposed to expulsion. He said in place of expulsion can we think of any other alternative.”
However, Naidu maintained that the final decision was unanimous.
“Jaswant’s book contains many objectionable references,” he said.
Naidu said the decision to expel Jaswant was a “painful decision” as he had been with the party for 25-30 years but there was no other way.
On Arun Shourie’s recent outburst against Advani and party president Rajnath Singh, Naidu hinted action may be taken after the forthcoming Assembly polls while he was confident Vasundhara Raje would abide by party decision.

Instead of others making the leadership decision on behalf of Advani, BJP should allow Advani himself to make the decision as he is, as of today, the topmost active leader of the BJP. They should simply allow Advani to get busy in giving interviews, addressing press conferences and traveling all over the country, everywhere carrying out the role of a opposition leader and a leader of the nation. Age is of no consequence as long as one is healthy and Advani has shown no signs of ill health.

Meanwhile, in Narendra Modi the BJP has an obvious choice as the next leader.

Finally, the next President of the BJP should be a young pracharak from the RSS, whose role would be to integrate the massive machinery of Sangha Parivar into a well-coordinated and oiled power-house capable of converting all the goodwill it has earned for itself into a massive generator of votes also. Long has the power of Sangha Parivar remained untapped as a vote garnering entity because of some psychological idea somewhere in the organization that trying to garner votes is not a respectable activity. This idea must be shunned. India being a democracy, garnering votes is the legitimate way of ensuring that our ideals in all spheres can be translated into actual implementation through political power.

Political power is not alien to Hindu culture. After all, Rama and Krishna were Kshetriyas and political power was wielded by Kshetriyas through much of Indian history. We need not see 'Kshetriya power' as the power of a certain caste, but as the vacuum that exists in any society's leadership. Unless this leadership is a leadership committed to the cause of taking the country to the acme of its potential, the country's future is bleak.

So the new leader of the BJP should be a person capable of consolidating the political power of great quality that is lying latent in and through the Sangha Parivar.

And now, Al Qaeda calls for holy war against China

07/10/2009

Cairo: A senior Al Qaeda leader in a video distributed Wednesday urged Muslims to launch a holy war against Chinese "invaders" in response to the "massacre" of Uighurs in western China.
"The atheist criminals have long used the most despicable, cruel and brutal means against Muslims in Turkistan," said Abu Yayha al-Libi, who is sometimes identified as the commander in Afghanistan of the international terrorist network Al Qaeda.
"Thousands of Muslims were killed, and no one knows about them," he said in the 20-minute video, referring to Uighurs living in China.
Muslims with historical and linguistic ties to the Turkic peoples of Central Asia, Uighurs live in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang, which Islamists call East Turkistan.
According to the Washington-based terrorism monitoring group IntelCenter, the tape was made around late July or early August and released Tuesday by al-Sahab Media, Al Qaeda's media arm.
Nearly 200 people were killed and thousands injured or arrested in clashes between Uighurs and Han Chinese in Xinjiang in July.
In August, the Turkistan Islamic Party, a Uighur separatist group that claimed responsibility for a 2008 bombing in Shanghai, used similar language to call for attacks in response to the "massacre" of Uighurs in Xinjiang.
"There is no path to salvation or toward lifting oppression and injustice save by returning to religion," al-Libi said. Muslims "must sincerely prepare for jihad (holy war) and take up arms against the ruthless invaders".
"Consecutive Chinese governments have worked hard to sever every link between the wounded people of Turkistan and the Muslim nation," he said. "They are working to destroy them so that their numbers will decrease and their Islamic identity will be dissolved".
Al-Libi called for "a media campaign to tell the Muslim nation the truth about what is going on there and to expose Chinese colonialism".

India should support Chinese nationalism. This is not tantamount to supporting the Communist regime there. In fact, just as Ram is a symbol of Indian nationalism, Buddha is a symbol of Chinese nationalism. Chinese nationalism will eventually eject communism from China. India and China can then become close based on the cultural ties vis-à-vis both nations' spiritual legacy. Islamic separatism would then be ineffective both in India and China.

China should treat their minorities with dignity. Rural China is a big question? The authorities in rural China cover up everything. Though big Chinese cities look prosperous the rural areas in that country are neglected. If they treat the minorities like the Uighurs then they are sowing the seeds for Al Qaeda to unleash a wave of terror across China.

All the best China.

RSS seeks to reinvent itself to build new cadre base

Santosh K. Joy
Residents of Dwarka had an unexpected visitor on Gandhi Jayanti: Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It was the first time an RSS chief had chosen to make the traditional address—annually convened in the Capital for shastra puja (weapon worship)—in Dwarka, one of the fastest growing suburbs located in the Capital’s south-west.
The presence of Bhagwat was expected to give a boost to the cadres that the RSS has been seeking to expand in the suburb that’s emerging as home to white collar migrants. His Friday address was attended by an estimated 15,000 RSS cadres clad in their traditional khaki short pants, white shirts and black caps. In the decade that the suburb has come into being, the 84-year-old Hindu nationalist organization has set up 200 shakhas (daily assemblies) in Dwarka.
The suburb also represents the new and more flexible face of the RSS. Keeping in mind the fact that potential cadres will come from professional ranks, the RSS has ensured timings and the regimen are flexible. While conventionally, the shakhas have operated in the morning and entailed exercise drills—as part of the efforts to create a disciplined cadre—the RSS has now included night shakhas in areas such as Dwarka to accommodate working professionals.
Exhorting the assembled cadres in Dwarka to make the nation Sanghmayi (drenched in RSS following), Bhagwat said: “While our nation has the reputation, it has utterly failed to secure supremacy in the world arena. Our values of truth and non-violence cannot be asserted until we wield and worship power, something which the RSS preaches and practices.”
The RSS, which is the ideological parent of India’s main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has become critical once again, especially after the two successive general election defeats. Analysts believe the rebuilding efforts are designed to reposition the RSS as an acceptable ideological faith to a rapidly evolving demography, moving away from the traditional perception of being dominated by the upper castes.
“The RSS is on an assimilation drive and is making special efforts to attract the dalits and the backward castes to its fold,” said Badri Narayan, writer and columnist. “It’s a subtle and slow operation and is styled to yield results with time.”
Critics are not too impressed. According to them, the fundamentalist, religious and ideological slant militates against its ability to reach out to a wider cross-section in the country.
“They can act as a major positive force, but the organization should first make their stand ample clear that are they in favour of an inclusive society with respect for all castes and religions,” said B.G. Varghese, political analyst and visiting professor at the Centre for Policy Research.
The RSS has expanded its presence steadily since 1990, growing its base of shakhas from 29,000 in 1990 to 40,000 at the end of March. Most of these expansions have come about in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which have a strong presence of the socially backward communities.
The right-wing Hindu organization was formed on Dussehra day in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, its headquarters. The organization, which was originally formed to unite Hindus—who form the majority of India’s population—today has at least 800,000 cadres attending its daily shakhas across the country.
According to former RSS functionary and BJP leader K.N. Govindacharya, the image of the RSS so far has been that of a paramilitary and secret organization, quite contrary to reality.
“The RSS itself is to be blamed for it. There is an effort from the RSS part to change the image,” he said.
RSS leaders admit that the organization is trying to re-invent itself in order to attract more youth and the weaker sections of society, although it officially disagrees that its popularity has gone down.
The new initiatives includes non-traditional methods to reach out to people. It runs “IT Milan” (information technology meetings)—an informal gathering of its supporters and sympathizers from the IT sector—in cosmopolitan cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai.
The organization, known for its emphasis on discipline, has become more flexible with its timings and is advising members to join the night shakhas.
In the course of its fresh approach, the RSS is also talking of being lenient with its rules on wearing the traditional uniform and a greater role for married members. The RSS is governed and run by celibate full-time members known as pracharaks.
It has also set up a group of senior functionaries to reach out to political leaders and bureaucrats, known as the Vishesh Sampark Yojana. The organization, which runs over 40,000 shakhas across the country, also uses social networking to attract youngsters.
“Using online social networking resources like Yahoo Groups and Orkut, and weekly physical meetings called IT Milans, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has over the past six years built a steady stream of new age ‘software shakhas’ to groom busy IT professionals in the RSS way of thinking,” said Ram Madhav, RSS spokesperson.
Adds Suresh Naik, a doctorate holder in microelectronics and full-time RSS worker: “The new-age shakhas (on Web platforms) concentrate less on the physical aspects, but more on stimulating the minds of its members to nationalistic thinking and a life of service,” said the coordinator for the IT branches.

How can a person speaking of spreading the message of truth and non-violence speak of wielding and worshiping power under the same breath? The words non-truth and violence are a misfit on an occasion such as Shastra Puja (Weapon Worship).

Emperor Ashoka preached Ahimsa but he had very big army and not dismandled it. To preach Ahimsa, the person requires to command over those who bent upon HINSA, the power of strength. This is the law of nature. But simply worshiping sashtra it never meant the usage of the weapon by swayamsevak. The use the weapon of service to the mankind and that has been appreciated by even Islamic country when needed and received the help from RSS. Sweetwords are better weapon than the knif and gun. The slogan of RSS is THE WORLD IS ONE FAMILY whereas the other religion and the Indian Political parties have just opposit theme.

The word "power" used by the RSS Chief is a translation of the Sanskrit word "Shakti", which word is there in Sangha's daily prarthana (prayers) and it means the invincible strength that comes from a willingness to sacrifice for the cause of the nation and this power, says the prarthana, goes hand in hand with "Susheelam" or humility, which is a quality that is born when we use the power, not to ride roughshod over people, but to serve our countrymen to the utmost of our capacity.

Most politicians do not seem to have any reservations on expressing their contra-opinions on religious matters but it is curious that they do so only on matters pertaining to Hinduism. Why are they not so outspoken when it comes to, say, Islam? Does this reflect their cowardice or does it indicate that Hindus are a tolerant people and you can get away with saying anything about Hinduism?
