India not a violence hit nation: Israel

Updated on Thursday, June 03, 2010, 10:13 IST

Jerusalem: Terming it an "unintentional mistake", Israel has dropped India's name from the list of violence hit countries it said had been "ignored" by the United Nations while the Jewish state was being condemned for its "unmistakably defensive actions" last Monday that resulted in the death of nine activists aboard Gaza aid flotilla.

"India was mentioned in the press release by mistake. It was totally unintentional", Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's media adviser Tzachi Moshe told a news agency.
"The moment it came to our notice, the release was corrected and reference to India was dropped", Moshe added.

In a surprising move, Israel, which has come under intense international criticism for attacking an aid flotilla, said that violent incidents in countries like India and Pakistan in the past one month which claimed over 500 lives have been "ignored" while it is being condemned for its "unmistakably defensive actions".
Lieberman in a ministry release was quoted as "reminding" the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that in the past month alone over 500 people were killed in various incidents in Thailand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and India.

In an emergency session on Tuesday, the UN Security Council called for an investigation into Israel's deadly commando raid on ships taking humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip on Monday, condemning the act that resulted in the loss of at least nine lives.

Israel appears to be confused about terrorism in India. India too, like Israel, is hit by Jihadi terrorism. Over and above this, it is also hit by its own home-grown Maoist terrorism. Unlike Israel, however, India is not aggressive enough against terrorists. Many Indians wish India was like Israel - with zero tolerance against terrorism. Alas! Indian politicians are caught in a trap called secularism.
