Why we must allow Arundhati Roy to speak freely

New Delhi, October 26, 2010
Writer and activist Arundhati Roy is in trouble for saying Kashmir isn't an integral part of India. Her critics want her charged with sedition for saying that. But it will it be fair to book Roy?

As exercises in academics, those who are genuinely pursuing it must have the freedom to write and consider anything under the sun and beyond it. Nothing aught to be taboo for them. But those who in the name of freedom call for arms against civil society must be punished by laws that uphold the harmony in civil society. Arundhati in her current two theatres of activism - in the theatre of Maoism and in the theatre Kashmiri Azadi, is in both places calling for or justifying armed insurrection against the society. The nation that does not know how to draw lines would not remain a nation for long. India must decide if the likes of Arundhati Roy have crossed the line of national harmony and if they have, they should not be allowed to go any further.
