Entire Kashmir was put under Curfew on Monday after Hurriyat Conference leader Shaikh Aziz was killed in police firing. He was heading protestors when he was killed. The situation in the state remained volatile on Monday with five persons killed and over 15 seriously injured in police firing during a massive security crackdown on the agitating protestors. With protests over the issue continuing across Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened another all-party meeting on Wednesday. According to reports, two persons were killed in police firing in Qamarwari and Sangrama areas of Kashmir valley. About 50,000 protestors were reported to be marching towards the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway. Fresh clashes took place when a large gathering of fruit growers, while attempting to march towards Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, were interrupted by the security forces. The protestors had the support of separatists and PDP led by Mehbooba Mufti. After the fresh clashes, protests intensified and spread to other areas including Kulgam, Shopian Baramulla and Sangrama. A large contingent of security forces was deployed to thwart the proposed march to PoK and the Srinagar-Muzaffarrabad highway was blocked. Paramilitary forces were deployed to bring the situation under control in the highly sensitive areas. Security forces sealed the fruit markets and deflated the tyres of fruit laden trucks. The security forces have detained more than 100 fruit growers and their supporters. All the major entry and exit points of major towns have been sealed. Earlier, Hurriyat Conference had announced that a convoy of fruit-laden trucks from Kashmir will proceed towards Muzaffarabad and people of Muslim majority areas in Jammu will march towards Rawalakote. Kashmir fruit growers and dealers association had sought the support of Hurriyat Conference for its August 11 programme of taking fruit trucks to outside markets via Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road after the "economic blockade". Meanwhile, the state authorities said that a fleet of 45 state road transport corporation trucks have been pressed into service to transport fresh fruit from here. An official spokesman informed that special all India permit on temporary basis had been arranged for these trucks to carry fruits outside the state. He further added that another 45 civilian trucks attached with Army have also been diverted for transportation of fresh fruit from the valley. “No 'economic blockade' of Kashmir” Agitators in Jammu, demanding allocation of land to the Amarnath shrine board have denied any "planned economic blockade" disrupting supply of essential commodities to the Kashmir valley. Shri Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti (SASS), a conglomerate of over 30 Hindu groups spearheading the Jammu agitation, denied the allegations of "economic blockade". Amarnath yatra suspended The Amarnath yatra was on Monday suspended due to bad weather in Baltal and Pahalgam areas in south Kashmir, police said. "The yatra to the Amarnath shrine has been suspended today. No batch was sent from Jammu to the cave shrine," they said.
