Talks fail, SASS to continue agitation

Jammu, Aug 09: Stung by the failure of talks with all party delegation on Amarnath land row, Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) has announced that it would continue its agitation once again. Earlier, the much awaited meeting between the two had started after the arrival of the all party delegation in Jammu early on Saturday morning. It should be noted, that the SASS, after refusing to hold talks with members of the all-party delegation, agreed to meet them after its demand for omission of some leaders from the delegation was met. TV reports said SASS agreed to the talks after PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti offered to step out of the meeting. Earlier, the Samiti had refused to hold negotiations with delegation members if National Conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah, People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Saifuddin Soz continued to be part of the team. Accusing these leaders as responsible for the present turmoil in the state, SASS spokesperson Leela Karan Sharma said, "We have no hesitation in talking to the delegation if these three leaders are kept out of negotiations." The Samiti had also expressed its readiness to meet Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil "individually" or selected members of the all-party delegation. “Adopt balanced approach” Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Saturday asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to adopt a balanced approach while dealing with the current situation in the wake of violent protests over the Amarnath land trasfer issue. "We must see how to reduce the difficulties in Jammu and Kashmir and as such we handle the situation with persuasion and goodwill," Patil said at a law and order review meeting with the state authorities and other Central Agencies here this afternoon. Patil arrived here along with the 18-member all-party delegation in the morning to review the situation in the border state. Patil, who was briefed about the present situation by Jammu Divisional Commissioner Sudhanshu Pandey, Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) K Rajindra and Lt Gen Viney Sharma, General Officer Commanding, 9 Corps, asked the state authorities to adopt "a balanced approach while handling the current situation". The minister also directed the administration to take steps to ensure that there is no shortage of medicine and other essential commodities in the area. Patil said the Centre will provide all possible help to restore normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. While apprising the Home Minister, the police officers and Gen Sharma said that several steps were taken to deal with the sensitive situation with minimum use of force. Curfew restrictions in Jammu Meanwhile, the Army today staged flag marches and imposed curfew restrictions in several districts of the Jammu region which have been rocked with protests over the Amarnath land transfer issue. Police said the curfew relaxations have been withdrawn as a precautionary measure in Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Kathua as an all-party delegation headed by Union Home Minister arrived here from New Delhi to review the situation. Army troops staged flag marches in Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Poonch districts early today. "There is no report of any untoward incident so far from any curfew-bound area. The situation is peaceful," said a police officer. In Kathua, curfew was extended for another 72 hours by the district administration. In Jammu and Samba districts, the curfew entered the ninth day today.

The problem in J&K can be solved if separatist forces are crushed with an iron hand. It is upto the Muslims of J&K to decide whether they want to be with the separatists or Nationalists. The failure of the government to see it as a separatist vs. Nationalist problem that is turning it into a Hindu vs. Muslim issue. This is an opportunity for Muslims of India to demonstrate that they are nationalists by joining the agitation for restoring the 100 acres of land to Amarnath shrine. The separatists must know that no Indians, Muslims included, supports them. Otherwise the ire against separatists will turn into an ire against Muslims. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai
