Zardari cites Indian model for PPP-led govt

New York, Aug 24:

Citing the India model where the Congress-led UPA government is close to finishing its tenure, PPP Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has said that his party-headed dispensation in Pakistan is "stable enough" to last for five years amid a deepening rift with the key ally PML-N. "The people in the West have little experience with coalition governments, but if you look at the Indian model, you will find that there are (17) parties today in coalition in India. With four or five parties, we can manage" to complete the tenure," Zardari told Newsweek magazine in an interview. His remarks came as the crisis in the ruling coalition reached its boiling point with the PPP refusing to comply with the PML-N demand on reinstating the sacked judges. The PML-N has also conditioned its support to Zardari's candidature for Presidency with reinstatement of the deposed judges. "The government is stable enough to last for five years," Zardari told the magazine in reply to a question. "...We are not even worried about a new election. If there is a fresh election, everybody will participate, and if another party is more popular than the PPP, they have a right to govern. And if they can't, we will come back," he said. Zardari has no business in seeking to become the President. He has to form a coalition with Sharif, with the position of PM alternating, as experimented in India. The one-upmanship game will result in politicking and not government. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai
