Interfaith dialogue is critical to health of society: V-P
New Delhi, Oct 31: Underlining the importance of interfaith dialogue, Vice President Hamid Ansari on Friday said inculcating its values in educational system could help improve "health" of the society.

"The interfaith dialogue is critical to our health as a society. Its success would lie in widening the ambit of its adherents, and their acceptance of it as an imperative necessity," he said.

Ansari was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day national conference on "The Interfaith Movement - where do we go from here" organised by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

Highlighting importance of interfaith movement, he said inculcating its values in the educational system could help the society to a great extent.

"The Interfaith Movement has a role to play. This is being understood globally. The 2002 Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders spelt out its basic principles. These need to be furthered.”

"A critical role in this will be played by inculcating its values in the educational system. Only this can provide the right type of nourishment to the mind," he added.

Observing that intellectuals could play a role in initiating interfaith dialogue, he said its practical relevance in a democratic polity would lie in its dissemination among the common folk.

This process of assistance begins in schools but cannot succeed unless it is imbibed by the society as a whole, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, educationist and senior Congress leader Karan Singh said in the backdrop of growing social tension, the interfaith movement has become very important.

Telling Hindu majority India that inter-faith dialogue is important is somewhat unnecessary, because all faiths have been allowed to live and thrive in India due to the Hindu broad-mindedness. Probably our VP should give such lectures in Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries. - K.Venugopal - Mumbai
