Two days after he advised BJP chief Nitin Gadkari (52) to 'mind-his-tongue' former BJP ideologue KN Govindacharya (69) attacked the party for mindlessly supporting a crackdown on naxals and said he had no desire to return to a 'Congress-like' BJP.
Last week, Ramnath Kovind (65), the party's national spokesman had said in Lucknow that Govindacharya's name along with that of former MP Chief Minister Uma Bharti (51) were being considered by the BJP Parliamentary Board.
While Uma Bharti's name is still being discussed -- some say Gadkari may spring a surprise by making her in-charge of UP after re-inducting her to the party fold -- Govindacharya told HT on phone from Delhi he wasn't interested in the offer made to him by Gadkari.
Responding to Gadkari's statement that Govindacharya and Uma Bharti, could be re-inducted, if they apologised, he said, "Yes, Gadkari wants me back. But dragging my name unnecessarily without my consent in public space is unjustified. So I told him that."
He said, "The BJP of today is aping the Congress. There is 'pollution-in-motivation.' I think we need to have a new political structure which is pro-bharat and pro-poor and not pro-foreign and pro-rich," he said adding, "These days anyone who talks of the poor is being branded a naxalite. Who knows tomorrow they may say that I am a Maoist too."
He said, joining either the BJP/Congress "at this stage" would mean playing a football match where both the teams are scoring on their own goalpost."
He elaborated: " I am not saying that I won't be interested. It's just that we require restructuring of the political canvas. For instance both the Congress and the BJP are unable to understand that the naxal problem is far serious than they would have us believe. In states like Jharkhand, naxals have complete control over vast areas. They control the politics of the region and several politicians win only by taking the support of the naxals." He said, "There are states where even the police is afraid to venture into naxal-territory."
He said, "It's clear that neither the Congress nor the BJP understand the problem completely. It's a socio-economic progress. Address their needs."
Govindacharya added, "If that fails then too carpet bombing cannot be the answer to solve the problem. You need clinical surgery and like an expert surgeon, who doesn't leave a scar behind after the operation, one should ensure that whatever action is initiated, doesn't hurt the poor."
Govindacharya is also planning to write to the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, as well as Chief Ministers of all naxal affected states, including UP, the need to adopt a more rationale approach.
Govindacharya said, when he stepped down as the head of the Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan, an NGO floated by him, many thought he was preparing ground for his re-entry into BJP.
"But, this is something I have been doing all the while. You create and move on."

• The Maoists have taken up arms against the Indian state and the government has no option but to disarm them, whatever the cost. Only, as Govindacharya himself says, it has to be ensured that it would not be a "carpet bombing" strategy but a "clinical surgery" operation. That the tribals have been neglected is a fact. That the Maoists are exploiting them is also a fact. Exploitation of the poor is not a solution to the problems of the poor. The bringing of the tribals on to the mainstream may take its own time - meanwhile no one should be allowed to take that as an opportunity or excuse for exploiting them. Those who convert the tribals and those who arm the tribals are both exploiting them. The Maoists and Christian missionaries have no legitimacy. They should be confronted.
