Tharoor gets emotional in LS, no mention of Modi

20/04/2010

New Delhi: Asserting that he had “nothing wrong”, the former MoS for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor said on Tuesday that he had requested the Prime Minister to “probe all the allegations against him”, so that his name could be cleared.

Taking a dig at his opponents, he said that he would not be fazed by "hypocrisy and double dealing". He, however, did not mention directly to the recent controversy over the Kochi-IPL controversy, which led to the his resignation on late Sunday.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha after his resignation, a privilege accorded to any minister who resigns without completing his term, an emotional Tharoor thanked the Congress party, the Congress President and the Prime Minister for the opportunity provided to him to serve in the government.
He emphasised his loyalty to Kerala, his home state, and his constituency, Thiruvananthapuram, his constituency saying that he will redouble his efforts to serve his state and his constituency.
From what Congress sources say, it were Tharoor's SMSes to IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi which played a crucial role in swinging the tide against him as the Congress leadership deliberated over his role in the Kochi IPL row, reports The Indian Express.

While Tharoor insisted that his role was only that of a "patron" and that he had not used his official position to favour any consortium, according to sources, the SMSes indicated that he had used his OSD, Jacob Joseph, to do negotiations on his behalf. One SMS to Modi read "J will meet you".
When the Congress Core Group met on Sunday evening, all such facts questioning Tharoor's claims were learnt to have been discussed.
UPA crisis managers couldn't ignore the fact that records of the SMSes, as obtained by intelligence agencies, could also have been preserved by Modi and may be used by Tharoor's opponents to nail his lies in future.

The Congress was also not convinced by his explanation seeking to distance himself from his close friend Sunanda Pushkar's sweat equity in Rendezvous Sports World Ltd.
The Congress conceded on Monday that "prima facie" there appeared to be some truth to allegations against Tharoor, though it said that his resignation did not mean he was guilty.

"Prima facie kuchch laga ki yah tathya hai. To morality ke adhar par larger issue ko dekhate hue kiya gaya (Prima facie it appeared that there were some facts. Therefore, it (removal of the minister) was done on the basis of morality, looking at the larger perspective)," AICC spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
Singhvi added that the Congress "is not obliged to disclose the proceedings of the Core Group". "As far as the nitty-gritty of guilt is concerned, that will be the subject matter of a larger inquiry, which does not include Tharoor only... Why would the resignation come about? If there was nothing, why would it happen?" The Congress spokesperson claimed that there was "no attempt ever" to brush the allegations against Tharoor under the carpet.
"Allegations of the BJP that the Congress reaction was slow and tardy are laughable, untrue and tendentious. The Congress... did not take any refuge under adjudicatory judicial process. This is in sharp contrast to events of recent political history. George Fernandes did not offer to resign and the BJP took refuge in denials, commissions of inquiry and technical legalese, although charges against Fernandes were more serious," said Singhvi, also questioning the BJP's "golden eloquent silence" on "daylight robbery" in the Bellary mines.

Shameless Tharoor had the audacity to face the Parliament after he has been caught trying to make big time money from IPL, misusing his prestigious position. And the UPA government, instead of charging appropriate cases against him, is going after Lalit Modi and vitiating the atmosphere by floating all sorts of insinuations against Lalit Modi. Using the Income Tax Department to issue damaging statements even before the assessment is completed or a formal assessment order is presented is highly unethical. The Supreme Court must intervene in this patent misuse of power by the ruling party against a person whose only crime is to have exposed a Minister who sought to be extra smart.
