Nityananda’s disciples signed sex contracts’

Bangalore: CID probe into controversial godman Swami Nityananda’s Dhyanapeetam Ashram near Bangalore has revealed that his disciples practiced sexual acts as part of ‘learning and practice of ancient tantrik secrets’.

As per reports published in a leading daily on Friday, various items including computer hard disks, laptops and mobiles phones and controversial documents seized during raids by the CID has exposed the sexual activities inside Nityanada’s Ashram.

The CID investigation has also revealed that Nityanada’s trusted followers were required to sign an agreement prohibiting them from revealing any details or taking any legal action against the ashram after practising “ancient tantrik secrets’’.

The alleged programme under which Nityananada’s followers were trained in ancient tantrik secrets was called ‘Learning from the Master Program’.

The report also quoted a CID official saying “Most of those who enrolled for this programme were women, and 90% were from Tamil Nadu.”

CID sleuths had also got access to a CD with more than 35 video clippings of Nityananda in compromising positions with at least five women.

Self-styled godman Nityananda Swami was Thursday remanded in four-day police custody by a local Bangalore court, a day after he was arrested in Himachal Pradesh in connection with criminal cases, including rape.

Shortly after Nityananda was flown in here from Himachal Pradesh, he was produced before Judicial Magistrate Pushpavati at a special sitting at her residence at Ramanagara, near here.

Nityananda was brought here along with close aide Nitya Bhaktananda alias Seelam Reddy late in the evening and taken to Ramanagaram Government Hospital for check-up before being produced before the court.

It is imperative that the Court establishes whether Swami Nithyananda was teaching his disciples secrets of “kundalini” - the mysterious “serpent” said to be lying coiled up at the base of the human spinal cord. A reference on this matter by the Court to well-known practitioners of Tantra would clarify whether Swami Nithyananda is a genuine teacher or not. If he is, he can then be said to be authorized by ancient Hindu traditions to teach this science. Modern society’s “values” and taboos about sex do not invalidate the value of tantric teachings. The modern world may yet wake up to the spiritual possibilities of sex if the Swami Nithyananda case is approached from a broader perspective. Of course, the Court would also have to draw the line between genuine spiritual practice based on sex and sexual exploitation. Sexual exploitation, by whomsoever, cannot be permitted or condoned under any circumstance.
